Amsterdam trams
Arriving in Amsterdam on a river cruise. Hotel near Vondelpark on the No 2 tram line. We will each have a medium suitcase and tote bag. Is there room on the tram for luggage or should we take a taxi?
Thanks in Advance |
I'm sure you can manage - I've taken bags on the Amsterdam trams many times. They may be full, though. Just be patient - and watch your belongings! Pickpockets operate everywhere in Europe! They prey most often on unsuspecting tourists. Even Rick Steves was pickpocked recently (in Paris).

Since you are arriving on a river cruise boat I am assuming you are getting the Number 2 AT Centraal Station. If so, there shouldn't be any issues with your luggage since the tram starts out there for the most part.
|
Dukes, you are right. Didn't think of that. Thank you both.

There's a wider step in the middle of the tram car: that part is for wheelchairs and strollers and it will offer more space for luggage too.

the middle doors have a wheelchair access sign and a sign for "strollers": those are best for you. |
I've just been lugging my case on and off trams in Amsterdam last week. No problems with space.. I just kept it next to me. The steps getting on and off are quite steep and narrow but if there are two of you it should be easier to handle.

You would think so, but when we arrived at Centraal a month ago looking to check our bags at about noon the facility was full. Make sure you have a plan B. |
schnauzer, there are two tram models in service at the moment. There's the combino model that I linked to above. That's the "modern" model, with step free access, but it is used on select lines that have had the tramstops adapted for it. Luckily, the #2 is one of those tramlines. The other model with steps is in service on the trams servicing the south and west areas via Vijzelstraat, because there not all tramstops could be adapted.

rs899 what do you mean by "the facility was full"?
|
btw, even on the older tram models there always is a step free section in the middle, meant for wheelchairs and strollers.

Trams also serve the main cruise terminal to Central Station - it is a bit of a walk-fine if you can handle luggage- if not take the tram to C.S.
That said I think a taxi from the cruise ship terminal to your hotel may be a luxury well worth it. |
Yes tram 26 stops in front of the Cruise Ship Terminal which is about a 15-minute walk to Central Station - take the tram to C.S. and change to tram #2 if not into walking with bags to C.S.
