There is rail service during the day which often requires a change in Osnabruck and another change in Hamburg.
For the Hamburg-Copenhagen portion the train is rolled onto the ferry from Puttgarden to Rodby which is about a 45-minute segment.

Use the GermanRail site to check timings:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
Depending on the train you take, the trip takes anywhere between 11 and 13 hours.
I've done this trip twice. The scenery is not at all spectacular.
You might want to consider a budget flight and can check on those here:

Hamburg is about halfway.
If you leave early, like on the 6.34AM, you get to Hamburg by 1.12PM.
Take the rest of the day and night to see Hamburg, pick up the next day, say at 2.43PM and get to Copenhagen before 10PM.
Hamburg is a great place, the harbour alone is worth a visit, and this would break the journey into two manageable halves.

Hi Tx,
There used to be a direct night train via Puttgarden, however, you now have to change in Brussels and Hamburg.
I suggest you check the airlines.

Thanks for the suggestions. My husband and I are professional photographers and we'll have a lot of gear with us. The outbound and inbound US flights are more lenient with carryons than the small European airlines so I thought the train might be an alternative. Maybe not!
