Amsterdam to Copenhagen
I am traveling from Amsterdam to Copenhagen in July with my three adult children. I would like advice on the best method of travel. We prefer trains, if possible, so we can see more of the countryside, but we are open to all options.

Consider flying on the budget airline Transavia from Rotterdam to Copenhagen.

Bob,
The trip from Amsterdam to Copenhagen is 10 - 12 hours depending on your route. Most people do this by night train, as I have done. It is a faninating trip espically when the train pulls onto the ferry to cross over to Denmark. Have a goodtrip.

Given the Øresund bridge linking Denmark and Sweden, do trains still go onto the ferries? I've taken the train across the sound between Copenhagen and Malmo and it just goes over a bridge.

Thanks for the input. We have no problem taking a night train. We have done this in the past throughout Europe. It's a fun experience and we meet interesting people. Where should I look for information on train schedules? I will compare them to the airfare and make a decision fairly quickly because it also affects my housing.

We took the night train from Amsterdam to Copenhagen in 2002 and it was a fun ride. My notes (still have them!) says we took the train from Amsterdam Centraal at 20:06 (train no. 203); arrived in Duisburg, Germany at 22:55; then got on the night train number 1949 (Nachtzug) at 2321; and arrived in Copenhagen at 9:59 a.m. the following morning. I found the information on the Thomas Cook Timetable, Map No. 22. There were more options than this, for example a stop in Berlin, etc., but I selected this option because of the time it got into Copenhagen.
Wasn't horribly fond of the Nachtzug because of the double decker cabins, making it a tight, tight squeeze into the double bunk cabins -- luggage really had to be left outside the cabin or with the porter. So my suggestion is, if you decide on the night train (which, by the way, is one of my favorite ways to travel in Europe), do pack a change of clothes and overnight stuff in a small daypack or backpack so you won't have to lay open your whole suitcase in the aisle to find something!
