HARD ROCK CAFE? you must be kidding me.

Nope, not kidding. Just a mention for something that will have a chance of fitting the stated budget. I realize it isn't "Dutch food", nor is it a "great" restaurant. But it is decent and inexpensive.

still, don't know why anyone would go to amsterdam to eat at the hard rock, but then again i can't understand why anyone would go to the hard rock in the us or anywhere else, sorry, just my opinion.

I used to love going to Hard Rock's..At one time, the one in Amsterdam was just off the Damrak and a totally cool little place.Now it is called something else (maybe the Soft Rock Hotel or something like that. For years we would check out the Hard Rock's from everywhere we had travelled, must have visited at least 10 or more of them..They aren't as popular anymore, however, who are you to judge a person that chooses to visit one??? Food is generally good at all Hard Rock's I have visited..

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Definitly will not be going to the Hard Rock, since I would not even go here in the states, but glad you enjoy it. I think we are going to have some good meals, and I am sure we will end up spending more from the sound of it, but it is nice to know some places that are somewhat reasonable. Thanks!

suze, You mentioned a little shop that serves Italian. Do you recall the name or its location? I know A-dam is known for Indonesian but I really like Italian.
Doonhamer- what kind of food does the Irish bar have? As far as Indonesian- I have never had it but my husband and I eat Chinese food, is it even remotely close?

hi my name is sanjeep and i use to live and work in Amsterdam, i can probably help you with some recomendations of restaurants or at least how to find some.
There is a neighborhood called jordaan were you can find all kind of eaterys, from spanish italian north african and all type of asian food as well.But if you are very in to asian you should go to the red light distrikt and look there.What you also can do if you are speaking english you can check out teleinfomedia bv site called www.telefoongids.bz its an english and dutch site so it will help even tourist and local people.

We tried an Indonesian ristofel meal two yrs ago that was wonderful. It was just off Keizergracht and fairly small. Can't remember the exact cost but it was definitely reasonable. We knew nothing about it but it was very convenient to where we were staying. It was a great choice. Happy travels!

Not sure how you feel about this idea... but you may want to have a nice lunch and just grab dinner wherever. My husband and I liked a small brown cafe in the Jordaan called de Reiger (sp?). Both dinner and lunch were great - but lunch was cheap (the best homemade tomato soup I ever ate)... maybe 20 Euro for two - wine and beer... soup and sandwiches and dinner was more like 100 euro for 2. I'm not sure we ate anywhere for less than 50 Euro per night - for two (including places that weren't fancy).

I've run across a few more that sound decent and inexpensive...

Van Dobben--a herring stand by the Rijksmuseum on Stadhouderskade

Warung Marlon--Levander Helstraat 55 (is non-smoking, a plus to us)

Bojo--near Leidseplein at Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 51

Whenever we are in Amsterdam, we eat at my favorite Chinese restaurant of all time. It's located in the little section of Chinatown, along the Zeedijk, which is just east of the Red Light District, north of the Nieuw Markt.

Nam Kee (Zeedijk 111) is NOT a fancy restaurant, but they do have delicious food, huge portions, and resonable prices (EUR20 total for hubby & I to eat 2 years ago). If you go, try the Tappen Noodles with Chicken and Vegetables, so far my favorite dish. Peace.

For great chinese, try the Oriental City restaurant, excellent food and great people watching, make sure you sit by the window.

A GREAT place no one has mentioned is SSK. It is a small place (20 seats) run by a ball of energy named Hanneke. She cooks a different three course meal every night from whatever fresh things she finds at the market that day, and chooses the wine accordingly. We took over the whole place one night with 20 people, and it was the most fun night we had in Amsterdam. Especially 'cause you can walk home! Came out to 45 euro apiece with all the wine we wanted (which was a lot!)
