Amsterdam.info - Museumkaart, Museum Card Amsterdam and Holland
Museumkaart, Musem Card for Amsterdam and Dutch museums.
www.amsterdam.info › Museums in Amsterdam

buy the card at any museum - perhaps a lesser popular one so you need not wait in a long line to buy it - like the Allard Pierson Museum near the Muntplein

Van gogh i believe i skipped the lines and went in but not sure -

gotta catch a train right now but will try to answer your other questions shortly.

Don't forget the Hermitage of Saint Petersburg's Amsterdam branch - in a neat old canal townhouse.

bratsandbeer Jun 4th, 2010 06:27 AM

Will copy all your info into a doc - we will be going to Amsterdam in September for the first time. Now to find the rest of the info.

twiggers Jun 4th, 2010 09:53 AM

Thanks Palenque. I don't see anything there which highlights the other benefits (i.e., free bathrooms, churches, etc.) or other areas outside Amsterdam. I"m assuming that when you go into a place that accepts the card, that it will be advertised?

Brats: We're heading there in September too!!

Palenque Jun 4th, 2010 10:03 AM

Every major museum i have gone into in Amsterdam and Holland - except the Kroller-Mouller has accepted the card - called the National Museum Card because it is national in scope

mauritshuis, frans hall - several in Utrecht and all six in Rotterdam i went to honored it - churches that get funds from the government are covered (i was told at the Lord in the Attic -still a church) and those who voluntarily participate in the scheme

You do get a brochure when you buy your pass that lists eac museum or attraction covered.

But assume all major museums exc Kr-Mu are covered.

bratsandbeer Jun 4th, 2010 05:38 PM

twiggers - we are going on a 14 day cruise from Copenhagen to Rome. Will fly to Amsterdam from Rome the 23rd. Never have been to Amsterdam and am looking forward to be there.

twiggers Jun 5th, 2010 03:01 AM

Thanks Palenque!

Brats: Ohhhh that sounds like a great cruise!!!!

Ill be taking the train in from the airport. Can I take care of all these things right in the Centraal Station (i.e., Museumkaart + disposable transit cards)? Is it organized and easy to find?>

not sure - but for the Travel Card go to the GVB (Amsterdam public trransports) office directly opposite the front of the main station and right next door is the VVV or Amsterdam Tourist Office - they may sell the Museum Card but not sure - anyway there are often long lines there - so instead head to platform 1 in Centraal Station and visit the VVV there - get one of their maps and ask about if they sell the card.

Cards are good for one year.

Palenque Jun 5th, 2010 11:37 AM

And if leaving thru Schiphol you can visit the Rijskmuseum branch right inside the departure terminals! Believe the museum card is valid there as well.

Is the Amsterdam All in 1 Travel Ticket (13.20€) my best priced option for a long layover (arrive from US at 8am, depart for Zurich at 8pm)? I've been to Amsterdam before, but my travel companion hasn't and I imagine we will need to hit Vondel Park, the RLD, flower market, Leidsplein, Anne Frank House and perhaps a museum. Basically, an overview of the city. I assume we will need to be back at the airport around 6.

Palenque Jun 7th, 2010 06:33 AM

Well kybourbon let's analyze it - a return ticket to Schiphol is worth probably 4 euro each way (not sure) - it really depends on whether you enjoy walking around a surprisingly compact Amsterdam in the tourist center or not -your five main sites are probably within a two-square-mile area - and to walk along the canals between them is to me as nice as anything.

But if taking two tram rides then i'd say yes - single tickets on trams are costly and you will not be there long enough to hassle with the new OY (sp?) Chip Kaart - so if taking trams and not walking this pass makes sense as you just hop on

I would take a tram from Centraal Station up to the Vondel Park area (tram 2 for example) - then walk back over to Museum Plein for a museum (Van Gogh or Rijskmuseum - Rijksmuseum is currently a fragment of itself, being renovated but the famous Dutch Masters paintings still on show and then walk to the Leidesplein - not far and down the Leidesgraacht to the Flower Market - then along the canal to Anne Frank House and then if time running short hop the tram back to central station.

Be sure to book a time slot for Anne Frank House on their site as lines can be really really long - so the extra euro to book a time slot in your case will be well worth it.

So i think the All in 1 Travel Ticket is a good deal even if it may cost a euro or two more than paying components simply because you can hop right on the tram upon arrival and not have to hassle with tickets, etc. (With the new Chip Card i am not even sure that tram drivers even sell tickets anymore)

can't go too wrong with the package - and you may want to hop more trams just to see various parts of the city - the Holland Tourist Board is easy to find in the arrivals area.

>>>Well kybourbon let's analyze it - a return ticket to Schiphol is worth probably 4 euro each way (not sure)<<

Yes, let's. I thought I saw somewhere that the round trip train tickets from the airport were 7.20€, but wasn't sure about the cost of individual tram tickets. I'm thinking coming off an overnight flight we will be tired and probably need to use more transport than if we were staying in Amsterdam. I've stayed between Vondel and Leidesplein before and had no problem walking all over the city from that location, but we have a very limited amount of time so trams will probably let us see more. Flight arrives 8:15am and departs 8:45pm so we should be able to do quite a bit.

Is there somewhere to catch the train back to the airport other than central station?

Palenque Jun 7th, 2010 12:57 PM

bourbon - as i said transport costs have all changed with the OY Chip Card - until now individual tram tickets were much more expensive than buying a Strip Card of tickets - like a few euros a piece per trip - and probably are now if the driver or clerk seated in special area sells them as i suspect they do - that would make the all in one ticket a good deal as getting the Chip Card is not practical for such a short visit and i assume like in London without the Oyster Card individual trips are more expensive (in London 4 pounds without compared to 1.5 pounds if using the Oyster Card).

And yes there are other stations from which to return to the airport but not in the centrum - but say if you end up in Vondel Park or at Museum Plein then you can easily hop a tram that goes to the Station Zuid-WTC (World Trade Center) station and pick up a different line of airport trains there - may even be quicker since that is a small station and the tram practically takes you right to the platform whereas in huge Centraal Station you may have to walk a lot thru crowds to find the Schiphol train (usually at the far north end of the station)

Cop a city map when you get the All in one card - i suppose it comes with one and a tram map and located Zuid-WTC

And the tram ride there will take you thru a section of Amsterdam developed in the 20s and featuring very unique architecture in the many flats.

hopefully hetismij will turn up and comment on individual tram tickets.

Palenque, have you mentioned the name of the B&B in Haarlem? I have searched, but have not been able to find it -- I may be doing something wrong. It sounds quite nice; we would like to check it out for a trip next spring. Thanks!

Haarlem Bed Breakfast Holland
Our bed and breakfast is located in Haarlem Holland and offers ideal lodging ... Guest to our Haarlem Holland bed and breakfast also enjoy visiting the ...
www.botbedbreakfast.com/

the Bots - brother and sister are very welcoming and the place is spic-and-span but i think but not sure there are no en-suite rooms (with WC/shower in them but only shared - but not sure - to some that is a critical factor.

Great location just off the Haarlem pedestrian shopping zone - bus from Schiphol airport stops a few feet from the place and it's about a mile walk to the train station.

On a canal and the breakfast room overlooks the canal.

GandCT Jun 12th, 2010 07:50 AM

Thanks, Palenque. In looking at their website, it appears that there are only three rooms, but with two baths that should not present a problem with not having a private bath. We appreciate the recommendation.

Palenque Jun 14th, 2010 11:43 AM

I am always aloof to recommend accommodations because everyone has different expectations and criteria. But i do here because the Bot sister was so friendly and the place was in a great location and an unlimited breakfast with quality stuff - fresh fruit, etc.

And on some days i was the only one there so the 2 bathrooms were split amongst just me.

anyway hope you find it satisfactory

Patricia, if you have a question about Amsterdam, just ask: most of the information from this thread is from 10 years ago and outdated.
