Why limit your bike ride to Vondel Park? Our very favorite day in Amsterdam was spent biking all through the city--got to see so much more that way! We did start out in the Park so we could "practice" riding the bikes--then when we were confident, joined the locals and rode all over, stopping to lock the bikes when we came upon a new site we wanted to visit. Fun!

I have ridden bikes all over Amsterdam and I would advise the average tourist and novice rider to stay out of hectic central Amsterdam where the bike paths resembled German autobahns without any speed limits and folks yelling if you dare putz too slow or don't let them go by, etc. And things like tram tracks can trip you up - I think doing a countryside bike ride gives you a whole different experience - here's one I've done many times - head down thru Vondel Park and over to Olympic Plein (Olympic Stadium) and head over on wide bike paths paralleling broad street to the Amstel River/canal and follow it south - go inland to Abcoude and take a sweet rural route to Breukelen (where Brooklyn go tits name from) - a nice regional town and then put your bike on a train and speed back to Amsterdam.

Bike theft is also rife in central Amsterdam - not saying hax did not have a great time but he/she may be a veteran bike rider, etc. - for the novice I'd say stay out of the city center except for places like Vondel Park.

Mac Bike in Amsterdam is a preeminent renter of bikes and also operates group bike excursions - many have reported good things about it - but if planning to ride on your own study perhaps some of their routes.

and if you want to pedal your way thru Amterdam's myriad of canals at several places you can rent pedalos and do your own tour - would be an option to rather dangerous IME biking in the heart of town.
