Amsterdam in one day- hotel location?

We will arrive in Amsterdam about 8 pm in late November on our way back to the US. We decided to stay over an extra night so we could devote a day to a quick tour of Amsterdam. Is there a particular area of the city in which we should book our hotel?

I'm figuring we'll do a canal tour (assuming they run in late November), the Anne Frank Museum, The Rijksmuseum, maybe the Van Gogh Museum and hit some of the other highlights on the Frommer's One Day list. I'm just beginning my research so I know I might be a bit optimistic with our time and endurance!

The first thing is to find a hotel, thus my question.

Thank you!

Others will disagree, but I got a great deal at the Marriott in the museum area and was so happy with the location AND the beds. My youngest and I liked it and the location so much, we returned there (and got another great deal) when five of us stayed there the next year.

This location was wonderful for walking or tram access to the Van Gogh and Rijkmuseum, was darn good for Anne Frank, and was an easy up via tram from Centraal Station.

Weather may ix-nay the canal tour, even if one is running.

Amsterdam is not all that huge, even for a short trip I'd want to stay in the "pretty" parts of the city. Leidseplein, Jordaan, Vondelpark are all very appealing.

Of course nothing wrong with staying right in the central district for the convenience. It's just not as "charming" to my eye in that area.

Not a hotel recommendation but you may want to check out the sites you'd like to see and reserve/purchase your tickets online prior to leaving home. With such a short time in Amsterdam, you don't want to have to wait in line for tickets.

Enjoy your visit.

But if there are canal tours, they leave from right across the street from the Marriott.

Canal tours run all year round - rain or shine (or sideways rain!).

Not sure what time you leave the next day (I'm guessing late at night), but you will need to factor the train trip to the airport into you schedule to make sure you're there in enough time for check-in etc, so don't forget that in your planning of activities. If, of course, you're actually staying 2 nights, ie one full day, then that's all good.

If you are only there for 24hrs, then booking tickets ahead, esp for Anne Frank, is a good suggestion. You can do so on the Anne Frank Huis website http://www.annefrank.org/en/Museum/P...and-location1/ It's not as busy in November with queuing, but still busy enough to cut into your time. You will likely only have time for a canal cruise, Anne Frank Huis and one museum before you have to head to the airport, so plan around that an anything else is a bonus. Lunch/snacks on the run at Febo (coin-slot food that's actually not bad!) would be a good way to refuel quickly and to sample a quirky piece of the Netherlands!

As for hotel, the Marriott near Leidseplein is a good choice in terms of location for the museum(s), and you could start your day there (leaving bags at hotel), then when you're done with the museum(s) you could grab your bags and take a taxi to Centraal Station, leave your bags in luggage lockers and walk (15mins) or tram to Anne Frank Huis (book your ticket time accordingly), do a canal cruise if the weather means you'll not be peering through rain-dropped glass and then see what time is left.

Other hotels are the Ibis Amsterdam Centre (right near Centraal)or the Crowne Plaza Amsterdam (right across from the station) or lovely ones in the Jordaan like Canal House or Ambassade Hotel.

Just received an email from Ibis/Accor hotels, they're having a booking sale, 50% discount for LeClub Accor members and 40% discount for non-members. Don't know what you want to spend or your date of travel but by picking a date in mid November it looks like Ibis Amsterdam Centre may be available for around $115 usd. There are quite a few different hotels in the Accor chain from basic to much more expensive, maybe take a look if interested.

I also stayed at the Toren on a short trip. Any hotel in that area would be convenient and charming.

The Toren is at Keisergracht 164. The Canal House, the Pulitzer, the Ambassade, Maes B & B, and, less costly, the Nadia are all nearby.

My favorite local hotel is the Owl Hotel. Reasonably priced.

http://www.owl-hotel.nl/gb/

Less than 10 minute walk to the Museumplein.

Less than 5 minutes to the Leidesplein, where all the trams meet.

Near great shopping and excellent food, such as the Sama Sebo restaurant.

We stayed at the Hotal Aalders, in a nice residential neighborhood and just a stone's throw away from both the Van Gogh and Rijksmusem, and about 100 meters from the #2 or #5 "Rijksmuseum" tram stop, that takes you quickly to Dam Square, near the Anne Frank House.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'll start checking out hotels now.

Madamtrashheap thanks for the detailed itinerary suggestions! We will only be there the one day; we arrive the night of the 21st and our flight takes off at 9:50 am the 23rd. We want to pack in as much as we can on the 22nd.

All - would you recommend the HOHO canal tour or one that just goes for an hour? I was thinking the HOHO would work for transportation as well as a tour. Thoughts?
