Hi Lesley:
When are you planning on going and what is your budget for a hotel?
Try Hotel Doelen in Nieuwdoelenstraat (part on Golden Tulip group), more room than in most A'dam hotels, nice view, 3 mins to redlight.Be aware that the redlight has many perfectly respectable bars & hotels & is safer than the non-redlight areas in many cities.AC is right, you'll get better info if you post your budget.
Also public transport is fast & easy in the centre (trams) so perhaps you can be flexible about where you stay.
You are always advised to book early.Jan/Feb is about the only time it gets quiet.
You are the first person I've seen on this forum asking to be near the redlight. You must be Scots.

Frank, perhaps Lesley is the first honest poster with this question. :-)
Anyway, I entertain a lot of foreign colleagues who come to Amsterdam for work. So far, I have only heard two answers to the question "Do you want to see the Red Light District?" Some people say "YES", others say "Hmmmm, well, mmmmmm, uhhhh, .....yes"

Thanks for the info.... I am Scottish LOL :))))

Obviously want to see other parts of Amsterdam but lets face it, the red light district is an attraction in itself and if you're going to Amsterdam then why not ? :))))

Budget is around 250-300NLG/room/night.

Hi Lesley:
Frank and I always seem to recommend the same hotel in Amsterdam. The Doelen. It is lovely and two tram stops away from the Red Light District. Or a decent walk if you are so inclined. As fRank stated it is part of the Golden tulip chain and you can book online at www.goldentulip.com there are photos of the hotel and the rooms. Good luck! Have a wonderful time in Amsterdam. PS--my mother and I took a walk through the Red Light District. I remeber being told that female tourists are really not apprciated so we were told not to make eye contact if we could. I was trying to be cool, but I really was interested!! :-)!
