Amsterdam Hotel with canal view - recommendations?
I am looking for a nice hotel ( 3 or 4 star ) in Amsterdam that is easy to get when arriving by train and ideally has a nice canal view. Would like to to be close to some nice cafes etc...
Out budget is around 100 euros per night. Any recommendations ? Thanks, Tony |
We stayed at the Rembrandt Classic Hotel on the Herengracht a few years ago and had a cannal view. It was about a 10-15 minute walk from the Train station and only 2 blocks from Dam Square but quiet.
It's not a great hotel but not anything bad I can put my finger on, and it was good value for what we paid. |
I like Eden Amsterdam, and some rooms have a canal or river view. Sometimes prices may be in that range. Check www.edenhotelgroup.com as well as www.hotelscombined.com .
That said, I think your best deal would be to bid on Priceline for a 4* hotel, although the view could not be guaranteed. See www.betterbidding.com for more information about that. |
100 euros isn't alot in Amsterdam. We usually stay at the Hotel Agora on the Singel near the flower market, hotelagora.nl, which has doubles with canal view starting at 89 euros. It's a 2 star with a pleasant breakfastroom, not luxe but nice.

The ever favourite hotel Brouwer is on the Singel. www.hotelbrouwer.nl/ rooms about €100 a night.
Hotel van Onna looks nice, and is in the Jordaan on the Bloemengracht. www.hotelvanonna.nl though I have no personal experience of it. You may have to pay extra at hotels to get a room with a canal view. Be prepared for steep stairs in hotels in old canal houses - and I mean steep! Unless you don't mind being in in the RLD avoid any around the Warmoesstraat, Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Zeedijk area. Perfectly safe and good hotels, but not everyone's choice of area to stay. |
The Brouwer has some pretty average reviews on tripadvisor ! I dont think I could risk it based in what I read.
thanks anyway though. |
hetismij, don't you think it's strange when people act as if their hotel is a really important factor in their trip. To my mind, you either decide to spend alot and stay somewhere beautiful like the Pulitzer or Canal House Hotel, or you choose somewhere cheap and just clean and pleasant. How much time do people spend in their hotels anyway? In my case, very little except when I am asleep.

well when you are traveling in Winter you want to be sure that if you do get stuck in doors all day, then it's something you feel comfortable in.
I am not sure how you arrive at the opinion that it's "strange". |
Tony, the Brouwer is popular with Fodorites. It always gets good reviews here, which is why I suggested it. I don't stay in Amsterdam - I do Amsterdam as a day trip from home, so have no personal experience.
As others have said €100 is not a lot for a hotel in Amsterdam and from what I have read of others trip reports the Brouwer is one of the better hotels in that price range. If you do a search here I am sure you will find some trip reports which have a review of the Brouwer, and other hotels in Amsterdam. I am always a bit suspicious of Tripadvisor reviews tbh. I have stayed in places that get rave reviews on there but I think are only average (or less) and vice versa. |
We ended up booking " Bed & Breakfast Fort Amsterdam " which is a B&B , €95 inc breakfast and free internet...plus its close to the station and on the canal, so fits the bill. The reviews all look good too although I too have my doubts about Trip Advisor!
Thanks for everyone's suggestions ! |
That is right on the edge of the red light district. you will probably have to walk through the RLD to get to the centre.
|
I suppose strange = not like me.
Hotel Agora's rates also include breakfast, and wifi in rooms. But I don't think being on the edge of the RLD will be bad in any case. |
RLD is fine...we're a young couple so are not put off by such things. From memory, if you stick to the main streets it's not so bad....and don't hand over your credit card of course !
|
That's Ok then - I didn't want you to be upset upon arrival to find out where it is.
Remember to be careful about photographing the area too - make sure none of the ladies are photographed. It could be a bit noisy if there are British stag parties in town. |
We, my grandadaughter and I stayed 4 days at the Brower and really enjoyed our stay.
Is very basic, not tv,very clean with a large bathroom, perfect location, all the rooms face the Canal, good Breakfast which is included in the price, the staff is very friendly. If you are looking for plush then is not the place for you. |

It's been about 5 years since I've been there, but I liked The Toren. Here's my review from TripAdvisor (where it's currently #5):
The hotel is in an excellent location -- away from the busy, central street, yet in walking distance to the Anne Frank Musuem, Central Station, Red Light District and the Flower Market. We stayed in room 421, located a few doors down from the main building. The room was clean, of decent size and had a charming canal view. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in. The linens were crisp and white and the comforter/blankets were so snuggly! Additionally, the Hotel was recently added to the Airport Connexxion shuttle stop list, so it was convenient and inexpensive to transfer to/from the airport (10.50 Euro). The rates are decent and the staff friendly. Television-watchers beware, pay-per-view (including adult content) needs to be turned off by request or you risk being charged an additional 8 or 8.50 Euro per day. |
Tarquin, there are two types of travelers: Those who care very much about their hotel and those who don't. I am in the former category. Probably a lot of it has to do with age. When I was in college, I could sleep anywhere and share a bathroom, as long as it was cheap.
But now I want to go back to my hotel room after a day of sightseeing and nap or put my feet up, bathe and get changed for dinner and just chill a bit, reading or watching TV. So the comfort of the room is important to me. And that's especially true at night. I need a comfortable bed and quiet for a good night's sleep since traveling can be exhausting. Pleasant decor and not wondering what disgusting bits have been left on the flowered bedspread also adds to my travel happiness. |
100% agree LAleslie.
At 19 i went to new york (1988 ) and found a "room" in 114th street Harlem for $200 a WEEK and loved it ! I knew it was a dive, but for whatever reason, I didnt care. I find after a day exploring, I spend most of the night at the hotel, so these people who say "its just a bed to sleep in" obviously have more energy than me! |
Narnya, I am glad to see your review as I have reserved a room at the Toren. One of the primary reasons I chose the hotel was its proximity to the Anne Frank House. I arrive in the late afternoon on a Saturday in the summer and I hope to be able to visit the museum that evening as it's open until 10pm. Great to know about the Airport Connection stop too.
I'll have to remember not to watch television! |
