Amsterdam hotel for family of 4 - Can you recommend one?

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children ages 7 and 12) will be in Amsterdam this summer (June ?)for 4 nights. I would like to pay $100-150/night and be located somewhere not near the red light district(that neighborhood not being tops on my kid-friendly environment list). Could you recommend such a hotel? Also, is air conditioning an important factor? I have looked into the Hotel Toren based on recommendations on this forum but I have noted that this hotel is not air conditoned. Wouldn't that be uncomfortable in June or July? Any input is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Wendy,
My husband & 2 children(8 & 11) were in Amsterdam May '99. Stayed at a wonderful hotel 100 metrtes from Dam Square, not too close to the red light district but very central. It is Hotel De Gerstekorrel, Damstraat 22-24, Ph.(31) 20 624 13 67. The staff were very helpful(booked our Canal Cruise) and the breakfast was wonderful, served in the adjoining restaurant. Have since recommended this hotel to Dutch friends travelling from Australia and they too enjoyed it.(They were in their 60's)
The hotel was very easy to walk to from Centraal Station. I hope this is of assistance! Enjoy!! Lindsay

We had the same quandries as you in August, 1997 with a family of 3 and a 23 year old daughter who would have croaked if we were near the red light district. Our wonderful stay was at the Park Hotel near the Leidesplein Square. Our room (we requested a triple, they gave us a quad, was very large, including an entrance area separate from the room with 2 closets and the entrance to the bath. Plenty of room for luggage. The cost was $150 a night including breakfast. It did not have airconditioning. And regardless of what they tell you, we were there in the heat wave (78-85) everyday. Air would have been nice but we survived, with 2 large windows overlooking the casino, the canal, the restaurants and the Marriott near by. I think they told us that there is only about 3 hotels in Amsterdam that have air (Marriott, Hotel Americain and one I cannot remember). Staying within your price range will be the problem if you want air and location. We were within walking distance of shopping, the Riks, cafes, movies, diamond show rooms, and the Heineken Brewery tour. Have a great trip!

Forgot to mention that at the Park, the breakfast was huge with hot and cold dishes and the staff was superb. Helpful and friendly. We could not get in directly but ended up booking through one of those room services mentioned in the brouchures from the Dutch Tourist Board.
