Amsterdam hotel
 

My two sisters and I will be going to Amsterdam the third week in April for five days. We want to visit Keukenhof Gardens and tour Amsterdam. Can anyone recommend a hotel, centrally located, that accomodates three people in one room. Thank you.

We are going in April with our niece and will be staying 3 to a room at the Canal House. www.canalhouse.nl The rate however is 210 euros a night.

I stayed at Hotel Kap and liked it OK. A great breakfast in a very nice dining room is included. They have triple rooms at a reasonable price. It is well-located near the Leidseplein area (which imo is a MUCH nicer part of the city than the true "central" area around The Dam and train station yet still convenient).

Stokie: I agree with suze. As I have previously posted, consider avoiding Dam Square area, or "central" near train station. My wife and I have found it sleezy, dirty and unfriendly at times. As she says, stay in the Leidseplein area or around the canals. You will be happer. You are not very far from anything. Have fun! Keukenhoff is incredible. Allow several hours to a whole day.

Hotel Washington has some apartments that for three people on two large beds, with a nice couches and a full kitchen. No elevator, near the museumplein and a lovely quiet residential street.

For some reason prices seem to up in mid-April.... I couldn't find a convention or any major event so don't know why..unless the rates are up for Queen's day well in advance.

Rates are up in mid April because the tulips are up in mid April. Zillions of Europeans come over to Holland to see and smell.

Queen's Day is the last day of April, one unbelievable city party.

But I've traveled then in the past and my hotel charged the website rate. This time they're charging add'l 8E over the website rate. I'll ask about it when we get there, but I noticed very high rates on a lot of hotels, also 2-3 night minimum requirements. I think it's between Easter and Queen's Day, and the tulips, all together!
(and woe to anyone else who is planning on going in mid-Sept if you don't get a room soon - IBC conference takes up the whole city!)

I stayed at the Schiphol A4 Hotel which is 5 minutes from the Schiphol airport via a free hotel shuttle that runs every 15 minutes. It was 75 Euros for one person, but they have rooms for up to 4 or 5 people. It was very clean and included free internet connections in the room. I highly recommend it and would stay there again. The only thing I didn't like was seeing a Kentucky Fried Chicken in front of it ;)

We stayed this past summer at the Boogaard's B&B. We were in a 2 bedroom apt with kitchen, living room, full bath, washer and dryer etc. and it was centrally located near the Leidseplein area. The cost was $200 euros per day. Host Peter was amazing and he kept the kitchen fully stocked which saved on food costs. Very comfortable and we appreciated all the space. You can check it out on tripadvisor.com. Like others we liked this area better than the Dam and it was around the corner from the Van Gogh Museum.

I saw several US based chains in the Central part of AMS: Radisson, Ramada, Sheraton, Marrott, Holiday Inn... I'm sure that they are pricy but they would most likely offer 2 double beds for your stay.

Thank you for the wonderful hotel suggestions. Suze, if you don't mind saying, when are you planning to be there? I know it is impossible to time the tulip blooming height but would like to as much as possible. Thank you again.

Stokie, I don't have future plans to be in Amsterdam. It was one city I visited as part of a past trip to Europe (summer-time).

We stayed at the Hotel Grand Albus. The location was great, right across the street from the flower market. A nice clean and helpfull staff. Good prices.

Try the Hotel Ambassade. A little pricey but unique. Excellent location on Herengracht, a canal, near the Spui. I stayed there once. I too might be in Holland in April but I stay with a friend in Haarlem. Haarlem is very convenient to Keukenhof. I have ridden my bike there several times. Hotel Lion d'Or is across the street from the Haarlem train station. The Carlton Square is on the south edge of the old town and is not so convenient for getting over to Amsterdam.

Agree with hopscotch about the Ambassade - lovely, atmospheric hotel made up of several canal houses linked together. A little less pricey would be the Estherea, which is about a 3 block walk away. The Estherea went through a major renovation in 2004 which involved the acquisition of a neighboring building. Same good neighborhood - convenient Centraal Station but not right in the Dam Square/Red Light district at all.
