Amsterdam hotel

Would someone please recommend a hotel in Amsterdam? I am interested in an inexpensive place that is safe.

We stayed at the Hotel Singel (Single? --same as the canal) in '92. I remember it as inexpensive. A nice small room with a spectacular view out onto the canal.

Just opposite the entrance to the Centraal Station (the main railway hub) there is the old but decent Hotel Victoria. Good buffet breakfast, great location. If that fails, just outside the door of the Centraal Station is the kiosk run by the VVV, the tourist information and booking bureau. They will gladly get you a hotel room or perhaps a place in a private home. They are simply great -- and they speak perfect English. Charge next to nothing for their service, too.

Check out: Rick Steves' France, Belgium & the Netherlands book. It has great advice (for people on a budget).

Teri,
I stayed at the Canal Crown Hotel last March for three days and loved it. It's in a good central location, quiet, clean, large rooms, modern bathrooms, and had a great buffet breakfast included in the price of the room.
Take Trams 16, 24 or 25 from the Centraal Train station to the hotel.
215 NLG per night.

Canal Crown Hotel
Herengracht 519-525
Phone: (31-20)42-00-05-5
Fax: (31-20)42-00-99-3
I second the Rick Steves book. My husband and I used it to book all our hotels in Europe this past summer. It saved us so much hassle, and all the hotels were very nice. In Amsterdam, we paid 150 guilders per night, which included a huge breakfast of fresh breads, cheeses, ham, jams, cereals, fruit, sweets and an omlet if you like. In May and June 150 guilders translated into about $75 per night. I believe the dollar is weaker these days, however.

Our Hotel was in a very safe place, right on a canal, and was central to everything in the city.

Buy Rick Steves' book, either the France, Belguim, and the Netherlands book if you're only going to those places, or "The Best of Europe" book. It's worth the $20.
