Amsterdam Hotel.

Could someone please tell me in what area should I look for a hotel in Amsterdam in order to be close to attractions, performing arts (opera).
Any specific recommendations?
Any advice is appreciated.

I've been to Amsterdam many times, and here's what I've found. I think that most hotels are in the center, however there are a few out by the airport that might come up in your search.
Everything is in walking distance if you stay in the central part. I'd say stay near Dam Square or Leidesplein. I swear that you can walk around the whole city in an afternoon, so you shouldn't really worry too much about location. You'll end up everywhere just by going outside.
We really liked the "American Hotel" which is a Sheraton hotel. "Swissotel" is another but there are tons of smaller hotels that are just as cute and charming. The train station is in the heart of Amsterdam, so don't be put off by the idea of staying near there.
Golden Tulip is a Dutch brand of hotels equal to Marriott (of which there is also), they have at least 3-5 hotels in the city that are good and central.
I stay on any of the canals and out of the museum quater that is a bit out of the way.
Hope I could help.
Melissa

Harry
The Hotel Washington is listed in the rants and raves section, just blocks away from the Concertgebouw, many musicians stay there. It is lovely. Have a grand time!

Hotel American is a Crowne Plaza, not a Sheraton.

Just did a quick overnight there 2 weeks ago -- heading to airport in a.m. We looked online for a "splurge" hotel 2 days before -- and found one in Sofitel Grand (there are 2 sofitels, this is the "Grand") -- wonderful 5-star.... really gorgeous rooms...with heated towel racks. overlooks canal, delicous delicious food and serves breakfast....indoor pool, turkish bath, massage.... very easy to get to airport by car if need be (or taxi). best thing is that it is one block from tons of restaurants and canal ride..whih was a great way to get bearings, too. discovered that every hotel we were considering was within 4-5 blocks of the one we chose. canal "bus" can drop you at 12 locations -- museums, anne frank house, etc. very easy. if you want to splurge, try it -- concierge very helpful and was easy to get everywhere we wanted to go -- stopped by the amsterdam history museum... very easy, canal bus drops right in front, beautiful plaza and lots of museums right there... plus "kiosks" for food outside.
