Amsterdam - Germany and Wine!
 

I will be in AMS in July and want to jump over to Germany for wine tasting for 1 day and night. I have done wine tastings in the US (Napa Valley, CA) and have no idea if it's the same or not. I would like a long day of visiting vinyards and wineries and tasting lots of wines, then have dinner and stay the night. Any ideas on where to go? I will be traveling by train.

I can't help you with specifics but this page on German Wine Labels may be of interest, http://tinyurl.com/kx9t5je. Offhand I would suggest the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer area and do a web search for wine tastings.

Probably the easiest place as Spaarne says is to head to Mosel for a tasting. You will find some differences to CA, firstly you will nearly only find white wine there, and you will see dry through to very sweet (11% to 7%). One way to enjoy these wines is with food so you might want to fit a couple of different wine glasses with say onion tarte in a bar at lunch time.

There are places to taste, and some of them come and go, I'd look at say Trier website (www.trier.de) there are loads of villages offering similar. However if you want to access 100 wines for around Euro 10 (might be more now) then

I second bilboburgler in nominating the Mosel - probably the closest to you - but also the Rhine has wine tastings; you might think about touristy Ruedesheim as a location to do tastings and hop on a Rhine cruise, if your time is limited. Ruedesheim is also the gateway to the Rheingau, a wine growing region. You can visit all the little villages by train, and stop at the Strausswirtschaften (small wine taverns) and try the wine while savouring local fare.

Another idea is to go to a wine festival, the down side of these is the wine tends to be the cheaper stuff that gets drunk in 1/2 pint glasses with massive pieces of pork and cabbage but they are great fun and (if you survive the afternoon/night) you can go back for a proper tasting next morning
