Amsterdam food is crap!

I am going to Amsterdam soon, and have heard the food is horrible and that I should pack up on power/granola/fruit bars and plan on eating a lot of those for the days I'm there? Is this true?

mh Mar 27th, 2002 07:10 AM

troll alert....trolls stop posting this crap as it causes the legitimate questions to fall to the wayside...

Travis Mar 27th, 2002 08:28 AM

what are you talking about, this is a serious question, my friend was there last year and said the food is not good and that he would pack something to take along.

Sally Mar 27th, 2002 08:31 AM

Well, you're definitely gonna need a LOT of food in Amsterdam if you know what I mean ;)

abc Mar 27th, 2002 08:34 AM

I think food in Amsterdam is not that good, but you can still find decent Asian or North African restaurants. It's not that great but better than munching on granola bars.

OK Mar 27th, 2002 08:35 AM

Travis, tred lightly here...if you post with anything but absolutely proper language or thoughts you will get trounced by the fodors self-appointed self-righteous post police.

trying Mar 27th, 2002 08:53 AM

Travis: My first trip to A'dam I had some kind of meatball that may or may not have been fully cooked. Tasty, but odd (to me). Last time we had the Reistaffle (sp?). Although good, I thought it was overrated. We've had wonderful Moroccan (sp?) pizzas, great pancakes, and even Mexican food in the Netherlands.

AC Mar 27th, 2002 09:35 AM

Hi Travis:<BR>I have had the opposite experience in Amsterdam when I was there in June 2000. We had a week's worth of Great meals. We had the breakfast buffet at the hotel each morning. It had a variety of things some of which I would never eat ;). We strolled along until we found a place with a nice atomsphere and interesting menu. We had Pancakes, Indonesian, Irish, Argentinian, German and Italian. All great meals. Great pastry shoppes, etc. Have a great time in my favorite city in Europe.

Traveling man Mar 27th, 2002 09:47 AM

When in Amsterdam I mostly enjoyed the ethnic foods, like Indian and Italian. But as Sally says, you'll be hungry and the food will taste *really* good. "Man, that was the best Indian food I've ever had in my life!"

TrollPatrol Mar 27th, 2002 09:48 AM

If this is a question then why does it "answer" itself in the heading - "Amsterdam food is crap!" ?

pca Mar 27th, 2002 09:52 AM

Considering that you haven't even tried food in Amsterdam, you could have been a little less vehement in your heading.<BR><BR>I don't understood this thing about bringing along granola bars. If you don't like the prepared meals when you travel in Europe, you can always go to shops and markets and get fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt, bread, sliced meats, etc. Even cereals like granola. Unless you prefer to eat granola bars.

Could Care Less Mar 27th, 2002 09:59 AM

To Mh and Trollpatrol:<BR>This is an open forum for anyone to ask travel questions. So what if the header isn't to your liking? Get over it, ignore it or go to another site if it isn't to your liking.I will post whatever questions or headings I want and could care less whether you approve or not.

xxx Mar 27th, 2002 10:00 AM

Travis please tell us where you eat when at home so we can laugh at you some more. If you live in New York and dine nightly at Le Bernadin, Cirque 2000, and Grammercy Tavern, then yes, you might be disappointed in Amsterdam food. But please tell us where you eat so we can see what the heck you're talking about.

Dee Mar 27th, 2002 10:05 AM

The food in Amsterdam is great. Of all the European cities I have visited, it has the greatest diversity of types of food. I found the quality and quantity of everything I ate there first class. Do your homework, Travis, and find cafes and restuarants that suit your tastes; whether they be Thai, Chinese, Philippino, Italian, Dutch, French, Spanish, Indonesian, Indian, Turkish, Pakistani, Moroccan or Surinamese, Amsterdam has the lot. There are many fine places for lunches, pastries, ice cream and chocolate too. Go and enjoy!

Billy Eric Mar 27th, 2002 10:11 AM

try the club sandwiches, they are the best I've ever had. There's a decent place on Damrak called Delta. Not too bad. Cafe Prisengracht is very good too. I can't recall how to find it. It's at an intersection of Prinsengract and another canal. (lot of good that does, right?)

Billy Eric Mar 27th, 2002 10:13 AM

in response to Sally's reply, you could always go with the space cake and kill 2 birds with one stoned...I mean, ur, stone!

TrollPatrol Mar 27th, 2002 10:16 AM

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA !<BR><BR>"...could care less whether you approve or not". Thanks. Glad my post was appreciated !!! <BR><BR>

hiphop Mar 27th, 2002 10:17 AM

The food is horrible, so most definitely fill your backpack with good ol' American food, or resign yourself to eating in McDonald's or Pizza Hut. Nothing you read in any guidebook or Holland website will be correct (they all recommend restaurants and cafes - NOT!). Only your friend who has actually been there should be trusted on this subject.<BR><BR>So, like, Travis, like have a like a phat time ... yah got my props

WordPolice Mar 27th, 2002 10:32 AM

Travis, my good fellow, if you're going to come on here and make a fool out of yourself would you mind at least getting the insulting expressions right? The correct phrase is "COULDN'T care less" as in "I could not care less" - which means you care so little that there's no room for caring less than you already care, if you get my point. By saying "COULD care less" you imply that you do in fact care at some level less than the minimum and therefore it would in fact be possible for you to care less. Get it? Thanks in advance for your attention to this matter in the future.

Trolling Mar 27th, 2002 10:48 AM

I COULD care less that you don't like my spelling, headers,threads... I am just here to annoy you all. A trolling we will go, A trolling we will go...

Travis Mar 27th, 2002 10:56 AM

First of all, this is the first time I've responded to anyone, so I don't know who you are trying 'to make fun of'? Second, thanks to all the people who are adults and have responded like an adult, I will take your advise over my friends and not worry about the food, for I have been throughout europe and have never even come close to not liking any of the food that is being offered. Being that it is my first time in Holland, and your friend says it is not good, you never know? Which is why this is here to ask! Next, it is just a simple question...how bad/good is the food is the food? That's it, simple enough, answer the question or not! If your not writing about how much you liked/disliked the food, then get out of here and go to the next question! Sorry my subject line had '!' instead of '?' And thanks to all the stoners, for you all make me laugh, and your right, in the end, I'll probably just want to eat!

Sjoerd Mar 27th, 2002 09:20 PM

As an Amsterdamer, I agree with your friend that there are many bad restaurants. The good news is that most of them are located in the "tourist belt" roughly between Central Station via Damrak to Leidseplein. There are many young backpacker tourists in Amsterdam who are more interested in price than in quality, so there is a market for relatively cheap places with mediocre food. The good news is that there are many excellent restaurants of all nationalities also, but please ask advice and most of these restaurants are a little outside the main tourist areas. Enjoy your trip!

Pauline Mar 28th, 2002 05:00 AM

Sjoerd ,<BR>I'm arriving at SCHIPHOL airport on the 19th September and departing on the 23rd September.<BR>Your comments on restaurants (for an evening meal) within about a 15-20 minute walk of the Ambassade Hotel (Herengracht) would be appreciated.<BR>

D Mar 28th, 2002 06:42 AM

I am a serious Foodie who lives to eat and definately travels to eat. I was very contemptous of my traveling companion who brought a big bag of Baby Ruths w/ her to Amsterdam.<BR><BR>ON the second day of eating(trying to eat) in Amsterdam, I would have killed her for one of those candy bars.<BR><BR>However, I was nice and thin when we got to Paris!

Thank you Sjoerd for the website, that's great!

Jake Mar 30th, 2002 03:26 PM

Hey --one persons crap is another person's delicacy. If you have traveled the world (or at least Europe) Travis, you should know that. You can't be dumb enough not to knowe that heading would incite. Come on!! <BR><BR>The food there is good--especially fresh fish. But I found it expensive. The pastries were great too. The food is, in my opinion, not as good as France or Italy. But in my opinion McDonalds and Babe Ruths are crap!!

Clayton Mar 30th, 2002 03:44 PM

I remember having these lovely croquettes that they sold in vending machines! They were scrumptious and cheap! I was on a student's budget at that time. 3 or 4 cpold really fill you up

Diane Mar 30th, 2002 10:43 PM

In a week in Amsterdam we had a couple of bad meals, but mostly good meals. We sampled many ethnic restaurants: Italian, Indonesian, and Greek. One day for lunch we found a cute restaurant selling nothing but crepes with many different fillings. Give it a chance. If you don't care for the food go to a market, but for heaven sake, do not load down your suitcase with food bars.

harvey Mar 31st, 2002 07:16 AM

Is there such a thing as Dutch food? Everyone mentions all kinds of food but never Dutch.

Carla Apr 4th, 2002 01:42 PM

Years ago I ate lunch at a Mcdonald's in Amsterdam. My children were young and not with me, so I saved a package of "frits sauce" to take home to them, thinking it was ketchup. It was mayonnaise. Yuk! Unless the food has improved, Amsterdam food is not very good. That lunch at Mcdonald's was one of the more memorable food experiences from that trip.

qq Apr 4th, 2002 02:16 PM

The sister-in-law of a friend of a colleague's boss says that the food is crap.

JJJ Apr 4th, 2002 02:22 PM

Carla--anyone that thinks McDonald's food is good is not a reliable source. It is one step above the eating from garbage can. YUK!

yyyyy Apr 4th, 2002 02:42 PM

Carla and the bunch of you who bash Dutch food--did it ever occur to you that people have differnt ideas of what tastes good? What ignorance and arrogance!! You sound like a bunch of losers--especially the idiot who wrote tghis thread--uuu duuhh travis. (The name tells it all)
