Amsterdam-Edinburgh
 

We have never visited either city. Could someone advise on what carrier would be best for a one-way trip Amsterdam to Edinburgh? We would like a direct flight if possible (in October).Thanks.

www.easyjet.com seems to be the best option.

Another and more exciting route would be to take a ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle and a train to Edinburgh. You will love that ship, the Queen of Scandinavia. Have a look at her at

The best carrier is the one that meets YOUR budget, comfort and time requirements - which none of us can know.

Both Easyjet and KLM operate direct flights, and these days the scheduled carriers often undercut the low-costs.

Thanks for the intriguing suggestion. How long is the ferry ride from Amsterdam to Newcastle? If you have info on fares, etc. I would appreciate it. We will not have a car.

There are daily sailings from IJmuiden at 18h00 arriving in Newcastle at 09h00. Cost per person is £61 in cabin.

Neither site is particularly user friendly so have a glass of wine and some patience to get through it.

On one of the pages it is written that they have a bus leaving at 16h30 from the Hotel Victoria (across the canal from Amsterdam Centraal Station) to take you to the port at IJmuiden.

I rode the Queen of Scandinavia years ago when it was named the Finlandia and sailed between Stockholm and Helsinki. It is a beaut.

If you decide on the ferry, it is not always the Queen of Scandinavia, it alternates with the Duke of Scandinavia. Both are good ships. The fare varies according to the sailing date. It actually sails to North Shields but there are buses laid on to take you to the train station in Newcastle. The train ride from Newcastle to Edinburgh is beautiful - it follows the Northumberland coastline. The ferry crossings are normally calm but when we crossed on Wednesday night unusually there were force 9 gales. We couldn't sail until 9pm and didn't arrive in North Shields until 1.30pm on Thursday. A crossing I won't forget in a hurry - I'm still swaying! I have to stress though that it is not normally like that.
