Amsterdam: Central Station to Wiechmann Hotel with one suitcase: OK?

Fodorites,

I've already asked a similar question today re Paris, so I am wondering if anybody can help with Amsterdam (last time and I'll bugger off - promise!).

I am wondering if it's an option to walk with a large suitcase (on wheels) from the Central Station to Wiechmann Hotel on 328 Princengracht, or it best to take a tram?

I am a young guy.

Many, many thanks.

You could walk it in in probably 25-30 minutes, maybe less. The linked map below shows the location. I don't think it would be too far -- I've done similar to Herengracht. I'm not too current on the tram lines, but there is a taxi rank to the immediate right as you exit the front of Centraal Station.

Thanks for the response and for the map!

Depends on how handy your suitcase is to roll about. The hotel's site says trams 1, 2, and 5 - they all leave from outside the Centraal train station - follow the rails, and when your arm comes out of its socket, hop on... Get off at Prinsengracht after it crosses over Keizersgracht - if you get to Leidseplein you've gone too far.

Thanks!

Munch:

How BIG is that suitcase? the reason I ask is (assuming you already know how narrow those A-Dam trams are) will it be unwieldy on the tram?

Although I see folks who take up entire seats with luggage (which actually doesn't bother me)...I would say get on the thing at the station and save all the walking for later.

If the weather cooperates then yes, walk. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

We walked from the Station to our hotel on the Singel Canal, which was much closer than yours.
My only advice if you do decide to walk, is to use the bridge from the Station that's pictured on the left end of the station on the map that was posted by Bluestar. (In other words, when you come out of the station, head to your right, walk past the millions of bikes, and use that bridge to exit.) It's much more pedestrian-friendly, and makes the walk much easier than trying to cross a busy street with cars.

If you want to buy a strippenkaart or a pass, the GVB office is just across the street from Centraal, combined with a Tourist Office desk.

Thank you! I really appreciate all the help here.

I will walk.

Hi Munch, we followed the hotel directions for the tram (as WallyKringen has posted). I just made sure that to tell the tram driver which stop we wanted so he could holler at us when we arrived there :-)!

We stayed the Hotel Wiechmann in Sep 2005. Great location. Walking in Amsterdam was lots of fun.

if you want to you can also take the "opstapper" (hop-on) which leaves from central staion and runs the length of the Prinsengracht canal.

I hit post to soon...
the opstapper will stop to let you off anywhere you want to alongside the canal.
