Amsterdam Apartment Location
 

Hello All.
I'm traveling to Amsterdam with a buddy at the end of Sept for a week. We are looking to walk around, see some sights, and hit up the pubs. We are looking to rent an apartment and I was hoping to get some insight regarding a couple locations. One is located the Jordaan region (Anjeliersstraat St) and another is located a little northeast of Vondelpark. We will be enjoying the local night life and don't mind walking around the city. Would one area be better suited than the other? Any other areas for a couple young guys to stay in? Also, one is a houseboat...any advice/experience with those types of apartments would be appreciated. Thank you and feel free to share your tips as I don't know much about Amsterdam (yet).

Regarding the houseboat, has anyone had experience staying on one? I get seasick rather easily so I'm curious how well they are mounted to the side of the canals.

Depending on where north-east of the Vondelpark, you could be well away from the city centre night-life. Anjeliersstraat is a quiet location but within 10-15 minutes walk of both Leidseplein and the more, shall we say, raffish areas near Central Station, as well as whatever the Jordaan itself has to offer. If the other place is out along Overtoom, I'm guessing that it's likely to be a basically "neighbourhood" sort of nightlife rather than all-night clubbing.

I've never stayed on a small houseboat, only the big Botel by the station once; but again it might depend where it is - on the small side canals, the chances of getting much of a wash from a passing boat rocking it are pretty slim, but on the Amstel river, who knows? Do you get seasick at the slightest motion or only in waves about 5 feet high (in Amsterdam, you'd be lucky if it were more than an inch or two for a minute or two, I would guess)?

Anything near Vondelpark is not on the Amstel. Anyway, I'd take Anjelierstraat. The Jordaan is perfectly nice for a holiday. (Not to live there)

Thanks all. Found a place in Jordaan, near train station. Opted not for the houseboat as motion sickness tends to be an issue for me.

Next will be researching cool restaurants, sites and bars. If anyone has some gems that they wouldn't mind sharing, I'd love to hear them. Exploring the city and finding unique, less touristy experiences is the goal.

Very excited for my first trip to Amsterdam!
