Amsterdam accomodation
 

Hi Everyone

Since we received such good suggestions for Paris accomodation, we thought we'd ask about Amsterdam too. We are looking for a double room (clean and comfortable preferably) at the beginning of July. We're willing to spend about 90 euros/night.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

NOTE that most inexpensive hotels do not have an elevator and a couple won't have a room TV...

The location of Kap Hotel is ideal. Good breakfast served in a charming little dining room. Interesting mix of guests. Helpful front desk staff.

I stayed in a very small single room (56 euro), top floor back side, with shared toilet, and if I had it to do over would spring for one of the doubles with private bathroom in the front.

Here's a comment I 'lifted' from Rick Steves graffiti wall:
&quot;...We stayed both times at the <b>Hotel Kap</b>, a couple of old Dutch houses and formerly a backpackers’ hostel but for some years now remodeled as a hotel and offering plain, clean, comfortable rooms with and without private baths and toilets. (The Kap is currently (Nov'04) remodeling its rooms again.) Most of the staff are completely fluent in English, and everyone is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet in the quiet, garden-side breakfast room (with classical music) is quite good. We have thoroughly enjoyed both stays there and regard it as our “home from home” in Amsterdam. I noticed that the Kap’s room-windows lack screens, so people visiting there in warmer seasons might want to be prepared for mosquitoes.The Hotel Kap’s location strikes us as excellent: on a quiet side street (Den Texstraat 5b) just off the Singelgracht, very near a major tram stop (Weteringcircuit, pronounced “VET-er-ing-sir-KWEE”), and within easy walking distance of Museumplein, the Concertgebouw, Albert Cuypstraat and its wonderful market, and just about anywhere else in Amsterdam....&quot;

I've also been looking into this issue.

Hotel Asterisk, across the street from Hotel Kap, also looks like a good deal.

This may not matter to you, but it seems both Hotel Asterisk and Hotel Kap do not have late-night reception. Because we will be arriving late (at midnight or later), these won't work for us. Actually, Hotel Asterisk said we could pay 8 Euros/hour after 10 PM until we arrived, but I'd rather not be relying on the good graces of a clerk who may be putting in unwanted overtime.

Another recommendation I've gotten is Hotel de Stadhouder - which also does not have late-night reception.

You might like to consider Priceline. A typical 4* bid is in the range of $100 USD per night, plus taxes and fees - which probably comes to a sum total under 90 Euros/night. See betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com .

Another hotel that looks okay, but may be a little less convenient is Hotel Plantage.
