Amsterdam

Hello,

I am meeting friends in Amsterdam for a weekend and would like to be pointed in the direction of a cheap-ish flat/hostel for four.

Also, I've never been there and want to know the best places to stay. We'll surely be partaking in all the stereotypical sins the city offers, so keep that in mind.

Most important, though, is a place to stay for all of us comfortably.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

David

many weekends it's virtually impossible to even find flea-bag dumps so act quickly - i've had to go to outlying towns on weekends - even in October when i just showed up, which i no longer do.

When are you going? If it is soon you will have a problem. Visit www.stayokay.com for a list of good hostels. You can then see if they have any vacanies for your chosen weekend. You may have to choose one outside of Amsterdam. Soest has one and is about 45 minutes by train from Amsterdam, but there are others closer.
These are all what were formerly youth hostels.

oops, yeah...when: we'll be there Sept 21-23 so we have time to look.

Not much time to look - you'll find many places in Amsterdam that are cheap and good are already booked for September.

I don't know what age bracket you fit into David, but my son stayed at the Flying Pig Hostel and absolutely loved it. He is 23 years old.

I've stayed at the Hotel Terminus, which is cheap, basic, and does rooms for 4. Excellent location 5 minutes walk from Central station and on the edge of the red light district.

If you're considering an apartment there'll more than likely be a 3 night minimum. there's a good spacious one in the museum part in the centre : http://www.way2stay.com/Amsterdam-ap...-en-67-978.htm which looks like 600 for 4 of you altogether (but you book for 3 nights)

I've stayed in San Luchesio, a monastery run by monks - modern blue-jean clad monks. It's in a swank area at the northern end of Vondel Park in a neat old monastic building. Rooms were about 35 euro with a nice buffet breakfast and good vibes. No curfew but no TV in room - quiet, safe, cheap. Google San Luchesio Amsterdam.
