Amsterdam
Anyone have a problem in Amsterdam in June with mosquitoes?
Thanks Melissa |
Been there many times in June camping and never remembered any mosquitoes in this rain-plagued climate.

Thanks PalQ. That's hopeful! (But are you the kind of person they find anywhere)?

Albus Grand: Stayed 2 nights in this hotel. It is in a very good location and is quite nicely decorated with decent sized rooms. The problem is it has no air conditioning in the rooms and Amsterdam can be pretty warm in summer. This means you have to leave the windows open and as mentioned in the other reviews there are lots of mosquitoes. Might go back in winter but never in summer again. de Oranje Tulp: There wasn’t much to the room, two stools, two mirrors, a TV, and a very small closet. After the second night there were big and noisy mosquitoes in our bathroom. Barbizon Palace: The room is air conditioned but we was still eaten alive by mosquitoes so take plenty of repellent. |
Well i respect Travelnut's many posts but i've sat for hours and hours in all summer months outside in Amsterdam and never remember a single skitter bothering me - i guess they are attracted to certain folks! In any case a little deet would certainly solve the problem - there simply are not swarms of mosquitoes - i've been going to Amsterdam in the summer annually since 1969.

We don't travel in summer, but honest, those were just 3 of a boat-load of posts about mosquitoes... all those canals, c'mon.
by the way, it isn't that unusual to see a rat now and then, so don't go freakin' out if you should see one. |
I love to sit by the canals and have done so for hours and hours and never remember a mosquito, that's all i have to say - if you've encountered them personally i believe you - in 30 plus years of canal-sitting never seen or heard one and i do get bit back here in a Michigan summer.

And if you ever sit by a canal you'll realize that this is not stagnant water but there is a significant current - prohibiting mosquito breeding, which requires stagnant and clean water, which again i'm not sure of is the case.

No, I haven't personally been affected, because we don't travel in the season... We live in Florida, and our dog's name is 'Skeeter' so we also know what it's like to be plagued with them!
I'm just thinking there is a plethora of commentary online (even the guidebooks) that there must be some validity to it. Maybe you're lucky that Dutch mosquitoes don't care for your brand of 'cuisine'! :) |
The canals are flushed through regularly to make sure there's a flow. I've never noticed a mosquito in A'dam, though I must admit I'm not often there in high summer.
Which, this year, northern Europe is still waiting for, by the way. |
My only visit to Amsterdam was 5 days in July a couple summers ago, and I did not see any mosquitos in the city.
