Any recommendation on hotels in amsterdam? Budget: Less than $100us per night
Location: In the center of all location

Does not have to be anything fancy, as long as its clean and comfy and walking distance to all the main attractions.

Several people have rec. Hotel Kap - I believe it is located across or near the Heineken Brewery museum... that is not real central, but everything is so walkable/bikeable/tramable (new words!.

Does 'center' mean the Dam Square? or Leidseplein? or just not outside main attractions, ie airport or RAI..?

I stayed at Hotel Kap last summer. It is an OK 3-star on a nice quiet street and yes near the Brewery. Easy walking distance to the vibrant area of Leidseplein. I paid 57 euro for a single room w/ a shared toilet and next time would pay a bit more to have a private one. Self serve breakfast in a sweet lobby dining room is included.

Are you familiar with Amsterdam? I ask only because I found the "center" i.e., near the Dam, train station, Red Light district to be quite crowded gray and dreary compared to the much more beautiful neighborhoods of Leidseplein, around Vondelpark, any of the canal rings.

Yes...this will be my first time in Amsterdam.
I guess I would like to stay in a place somewhere by the museums, somewhere that is safe to stroll around at night.

Since you are looking for a 'budget' hotel, choose a few, then look at hotel reviews on www.channels.nl before you book.. people are brutally honest on there! then come back here and see if you get any more comments about your choices.
p.s. Hotel Acro gets favorable reviews from what I've seen (as being clean) and it is located between Vondelpark and the museum area.

Actually, we have changed our minds and decided to go with a more expensive hotel. As a matter of fact, we just booked our stay at NH Krasnapolsky...heard that its a great location and great hotel and we got a great deal for 110 Euro per night.

Krasnapolsky is on Dam Square which is very busy and surprisingly drab. Personally I would prefer a hotel on one of the canals or near Leidseplein/Vondel Park. You got a good rate, though, and the hotel is OK.

Please check out the rants and raves about Hotel Washington. It's 2 blocks from the museumplein and tram lines. It's a lovely place. I think the rants and raves comments size it up well. Have a grand time, we'll be there in a year.

I don't know a thing about the hotel, but was trying to get you out into Leidseplein, Vondelpark, or the canal districts - somewhere away from the Dam (you'll see why, or heck maybe you'll love it) LOL. Also that's not really the museum area either.

But still I wish you a wonderful trip & maybe you'll post back for us how things turned out. I've only been to Amsterdam once (last summer) but had fairly strong reactions to it, both good and bad.

If you got the Krasnapolsky for 110 Euro's, I would take it...I just got back from Amsterdam yesterday and paid 90 Euro for a 1*........There is nothing wrong with staying in that area (Dam Square) because if you don't like it there, all you have to do is take the tram or walk somewhere else where you do like, but don't give up a good deal on a hotel in Amsterdam!!

Thanks for all the opinions, I was actually gonna change my mind on switching to another hotel near Leidseplein/Vondel Park, but I can't seem give up on the great deal I got on a luxury hotel, so I think I will stick with it especially knowing that I will be staying at a high class hotel in Europe for the first time instead of the budget ones which we usually stay at for all of our European trip. We really enjoy walking around to all places in Europe better than to use public transportations. Its a better way to absorb the beauty of the other side of the world, so doing a little walking to the museums will be fine with us. Any ideas of how far it is from my hotel to the museums by walking?

I'd hazard a guess as to 45 min to an hour to walk from Dam to Museumplein... you can put two addresses into www.mappy.com, choose 'on foot' and see how many meters or kms it tells you...

Believe me, the Krasnapolsky is quite a bit better than just "OK" as someone described it and for 110E per night it is a bargain even in their "standard" rooms. So you're on the Dam..right in the center of things..you can wealk to the museums if you want or easily get a tram (the hotel will tell you which one) you might consider walking up the four blocks to the outside of the Centraal Station and check in at the tourist office directly outside for all sorts of ideas, tram tickets, etc., etc.

I think you'll enjoy your stay a great deal.

Krasnapolski is a very good hotel, and their breakfast in the winter garden is excellent. Their cheapest rooms are very small and a bit drab; I have stayed in one on a special offer. But it is still a very good rate for this hotel.

just returned from amsterdam 2 weeks ago. Stayed in a great location, 1 block from the Van Gogh museum..guiet, elegant street. Hotel Fita. Non smoking small hotel. Charming and entertaining owners. Amsterdam is a walking city, and transportation is great. You can hop on and off the trams from every corner. Try Hotelfita.com

wslux, I'm a fast walker and I could walk from Krasnapolsky to the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum in 15 minutes. That's hoofin' it, but you'd have to crawl to take an hour! The tram will be the easiest & fastest means of transportation. Watch your bags around the Dam.

Thanks for the info guys! I love walking, so regardless 15 min or 1 hour is no big deal to me, I just want to get an idea of how far it is from the hotel that way I can plan out my itinerary for this trip.

I find that the breakfast at Hotel Kras is a little pricey (20 Euro), is it worth it to give it a try? What kinda of breakfast do they serve there for $20 Euro?

20 euro for breakfast? Now I know why I always stay in little hotels where breakfast is included!
Don't know what they serve for 20 euro; it's probably a buffet. Hope someone else can tell you. For a lot less, however, you can stop into any cafe (not a 'coffeeshop', unless you want 'space cake' and marijuana tea!) and get coffee or tea or OJ and a piece of apple pie or something savory. There are numerous places advertising 'tourist breakfast' as well, or you could go to the underground Albert Heijn supermarket near the Van Gogh museum (entrance across the street from the Concertgebouw) and get your own fixings.

Hotel K is a good hotel but if night noise is an issue you may want to reconsider.

The Jolly Carlton is several blocks away and fits your criteria. Breakfast was included when we stayed there.
