Am taking a trip in a couple of weeks and will have about a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam - How far from the airport to town and what is the best mode of transportation to take?
Besides Anne Frank house any other must see's in this short of time?

You can jump on a train from the airport to Centraal station very easily...I think its 3-4 euro each way.

It takes about 15 min. or so to take the train from the Schiphol airport and end up in the center of Amsterdam. Not to offend, but check out the red light district. Very different. We took a boat cruise down the canals, was very relaxing. We fell in love with these sandwhich's called Doners. There is a little place right out of the train station(across the street). They were to die for! So much to see, just walking around. Enjoy yourself! Jennifer

redlight district better go quick as the Mayor of Amsterdamned has vowed to remove it as soon as possible and council is going along.

I'd take the boat trips thru the canals - leaving from opposite Central Station

anne Frank is at most a mile walk along the lovely Princes'Canal from the station.

Bags can be left in the basement luggage lockers at Schiphol

Airport trains - buy a Daag Retour ticket round trip a tad cheaper than two one ways

cancel the ticket yourself in machines before getting on the train (last i was there anyway)

Two train lines - one goes to Amsterdam Central )C.S. on schedule boards and the other goes to suburban Amsterdamned stations like Zuid-RAI and beyond but not Centraal station - so board the right train - look at the signs above the entrance and overhead ones trackside and ask as everyone here practically speaks English

Only must see in your case is Anne Frank House - otherwise canal boat cruise and wander around the cute area of canals just southwest of the train station, etc.

If into Museums the Rijksmuseum is closed but has its best works on show in a part of the complex that remains open during renovation and the Van Gogh Museum is next door.

Since it's close to the Anne Frank Huis, visit the Negen Straatjes (Nine Little Streets). It has some local nice boutiques like the Kaaskamer (cheese shop), Cafe Pompadour (delicious cakes and tea), and a slew of fashionable and arty little stores.

You should have enough time to visit a coffee shop and smoke a joint - if you like that sort of thing. There are a few shops in the Anne Frank Huis neighborhood that are quite nice.
