I travel because of my insatiable curiosity about the world, not confined to Europe I might add, although I never tire of exploring the villages, being thrilled with the museums, experiencing the 'ah' factor in the churches and cathedrals and reliving various locales of books I have read over the years. I like to travel and Europe is easy - most people there look like me and speak a language or two that I also speak. Same reason I went to Canada this summer or I take weekend roadtrips in my region - easy. Although I'm getting ready for a real adventure - I may try South America.

I love all the things listed, but my main reasons for going to Europe are the different cultures and the history that you find everywhere you look. You can just stand still anywhere over there and feel history. Know what I mean.

A lady on a flight in the USA told me she and her husband were about to retire. I asked her, "Florida or West Virginia?". She said neither,"We are going to Europe." I asked why. "It's civilized." I like the audience behavior at the opera or such. There is almost never a sound during the performance, no one is let in during the performance, there are no distractions. In Madison, Wisconsin, we suffered through a wonderful performance of Romeo and Juliet accompanied by comings and goings of many people, flashlights used to read programs, and almost continual comments and conversations. I have yet to hear a mobile phone in a European theater. How is it now in Chicago or New York theaters?

I was born in Austria. My parents emigrated to the US when I was 2. I think they were crazy! I go "home" as often as I can.

Good writing. I can see Robert Mitchum in a wrinkled cheap suit, unshaven and needing a drink, in pursuit of the brassy blond who knows who killed his wife.

For the sense of history. I was able to stand at the door of the schoolhouse where my forefather taught before he emigrated to the States in the 1600s, and think about what a decision, what a journey that must have been. For me, that tie still feels very strong. I cry every time I leave Europe, already missing the peace, the tradition, the culture. I'm with George, above. I wish we Americans could be more "civilized" and less "fun."

RE: Liz

Its never too late to reverse your parent's mistake. Buy a one way ticket on your next trip to Austria. Talk is cheap - let's see some action! Bet your'll be back in less than two years.

The art is a huge draw for me, but so are many other things. It's just too difficult to pinpoint my main motivation, because if there were no more art, I would still be drawn to Europe like an ant is to a picnic.

The obvious reasons like the art, architecture, food, wine, beer and fashion. To experience a place that is steeped in tradition and sane. Europe's charm and quaintness. The diversity of so many cultures in such a small place. Just to see people that live entirely differently.

Because my husband's family & mine are both from Great British heritages - it is fun to see where we came from and see the history, like others said before - we just are not as old of a country! I also am going for the food & Shopping!!!!
