American Loses Hotel
 

I wouldn't have thought this was possible, but after a 22 hour flight ordeal I had once, I can see assuming my memory is better than it actually is!

LOL Tuscan. My late husband always talked about the time when he was an officer in the US Navy. A group of officers including my DH went on shore and evidently had quite a night of drinking. At the end of the evening..or early morning? they couldn't find the port or their ship, lol. They too had police "deliver" them to their ship. The Captain was NOT amused!

Gosh, and I was just feeling bad about coming home after two weeks in France and not being able to remember my password for my major client's email system.

Just for the record I want to say, as an American, I have never lost my hotel and as far as I know this is not a common American trait. My parked car is another matter......... ;)

Whenever I travel, especially when my elderly father ventures off on his own, I make sure he has the hotel's business card or a print-out with the hotel's name, address and phone number.

I remember being on a russian-speaking bus tour in Disneyland, the tour guide let us loose in the park, and on the way back we'd picked up an elderly pair - they got disoriented, didn't know how to get back to the hotel and didn't even speak English!

It's funny for a young guy, but not for old people.

Okay, I live in Tampa and sent my husband and his buddies to Orlando (an hour away) for a golf weekend. One of the friends who is also from Tampa went out by himself after the rest had retired, took a cab to a bar, and on his return told the driver he was staying at Embassy Suites. The driver said, "Which one? There are six." Our friend freaked. Needless to say they had to drive to each one so he could walk into the lobby and ask if he was staying there. Luckily, he was at #3. True story which of course he will NEVER live down.

Always take the address with you even if you are semi-local.

I wonder if he's a Fodorite?? If he is, don't ever let him plan a get together!

Those are some extra especially nice policemen. Don't try that in Chicago, for instance.

Is nobody willing to admit that they have done this? I have - twice!

First time was with a group of colleagues in Paris for a meeting. We were staying out at Pont St. Cloud, had dinner in the restaurant, where there was a lot of wine, and then headed down to the Buddha Bar where we drank Moet into the early hours. We all piled into taxis and then realized none of us knew the name of the hotel. I had stayed there before and could have directed the taxi driver, but not in FRENCH after THAT much champagne. Luckily, we had ONE person in the group that is a tea-tottler and a French speaker and we did found our way home.

Second time, in Paris again, I arrived on the train from London and realized as I queued for a taxi that I had forgotten to bring the hotel details (no Champagne was involved, this was sheer incompetence!). I could not for the life of me remember the name of the hotel or the address, but I know Paris pretty well so I knew approximately where it was. I know I had a real cheek, but I got into the taxi anyway and drew a map for the (lady) taxi driver. She thought it was hilarious and was willing to work with me. She drove me to the top if the street I thought it was on and waited with my luggage while I ran into one of the hotels on the street and asked if they had a reservation for me – luckily, I was right the first time.

BTW, I am NOT American and yes, it is a miricle that I manage to find my way home! :)
