American Express tours in Rome
I heard that American Express city tours are very good in Rome, but I can not find a website for them. Has anyone used them in Rome? I know the office is at the bottom of the Spanish Steps. I'm trying to find out what tours they offer and how much they cost.

Sorry for that last post- I didn't mean to send it yet! As I was saying, I am also interested in getting information on these tours (in Venice and Florence), but I can't find a website for them either. In Rome, we just walked up to the office and booked it there, but it would be nice to see what they offer in advance.

I didn't find a website either, but here's a snippet from, if you'll pardon the expression, Frommers.
"One of the leading tour operators is American Express, Piazza di Spagna 38 (tel. 06-67641; Metro: Spagna). One popular tour is a 4-hour orientation of Rome and the Vatican, which departs most mornings at 9:30am and costs 40€ ($36) per person. Another 4-hour tour, which focuses on the Rome of antiquity (including visits to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the ruins of the Imperial Palace, and San Pietro in Vincoli), costs 37.50€ ($33). From April to October, a popular excursion outside Rome is a 5-hour bus tour to Tivoli, where tours are conducted of the Villa d'Este and its spectacular gardens and the ruins of the Villa Adriana, all for 45€ ($40) per person."

Goodmorning, dtp Have taken a few of these tours in Rome over the years,
mostly originating with Amerx, however
did find that if there are a low number of tour members, they will combine tours with Carrani or Appian,
however regardless they were very good..Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

I'm not sure American Express provides travel services any more, other than the financial services associated with their products, such as cards or travelers checks. I know they have closed their offices here in Salt Lake City.
In 1999 we took an American Express tour of Italy, which was pretty good for a tour with centrally located hotels, but lately when we have gone in offices in Europe to get money from a card it seems that they no longer have city tours available.

American Express Rome does indeed have city tours, and you can make the purchase arrangements while there in the same office that handles the exchange of money. They've sub-contracted out to VasTours, but all the Amex tour guides are now still there and working for VasTours. I was just there in September and October.

I found an email address for the Piazza di Spagna address.
[email protected]
You could email them and ask if they still do the tours.

On our first trip to Italy in 1999, we took the half-day tours in Rome and Venice and enjoyed them. The only criticism we had came when the Rome guide tried to sell us a book he wrote! Other than that, he was a good guide!
In Rome I would recommend the tour of the ancient section. To also include the Vatican, I would think, would be too much for one tour.
And, I remember the office near the Spanish Steps very well.
