"American" bars in Munich - want to watch football on Thanksgiving
Hi All - we will be in Munich on Thanksgiving day. DH is a huge Cowboys fan, so he was wondering if there would be anywhere in Munich to catch the football games (it is also our 4th wedding anniversary!). I know it will be on at 10-11 p.m. at night, so I'm not sure if anywhere will have it!!
Thanks! |
It might be on the Armed Forces Network - which might be carried in your hotel.
The Munich Marriott has a sports bar that might carry the games. (Wear something slinky and see if you can get him to change his mind about football.) And oh yeah - the Cowboys suck. |
Thanks for everything but the last part, Dutch. Let me guess, Eagles fan? :)
|
No - a Saints fan :)

This channel is a pay TV station on cable in Munich. Many people have it, because it's bundeled with some more interesting stations. So what you can do is ask someone on the street, if he has a "Premiere Abo" (all channels) and if you can watch the game at his place :D. AFN is not available in Munich. |
|
Nobody in Germany is interested in American football.
It will be very hard to find a place to watch it. Searching for an opportunity to watch the games will spoil the whole day. So better enjoy your wedding anniversary and forget about football this day. Tell DH "When in Rome..." |
I agree with traveller - it is you anniversary for heaven's sake!
However if he really can't do without his fix of football certainly in the Netherlands, and maybe in Germany too ESPN is available in some hotels and on cable. He may get lucky (and you unlucky) enough to find that your hotel has it. Otherwise tell him to set the recorder before you leave, to ignore all US newspapers whilst you are away and let him watch the game, without knowing the results, when he gets home. Should help cure his jet lag too :) |
Yep, most people won't even know that they have a subscription to that channel. :D. You'd maybe even have to tell them how to rescan channels on their cable box. :D
Having access to Munich cable, I can tell you definitivly, that ESPN in NOT available here, but NASN IS available everywhere where people have access to the Munich cable network. It's encoded, BUT available in the basic pay tv digital package, so quite a few people have subscriptions. |
Logos, I'm sure you are correct, but this page on the Marriott website shows ESPN in their rooms (scroll down to Guest Room Information): http://www.marriott.com/hotels/fact-...h-city-center/
|
Yes, they may have exclusive arrangements with any station. Their "private cable" so to speak. Can either come from satellite or most likely via IPTV.
Or it even is NASN which is a subsidiary of ESPN. ;-) |
Either way it sounds like bad news for jenblase and her wedding anniversary.
Keep it quite jen, and tell him to set the recorder! |
Don't worry. The Lions and Cowboys will both win. The Cowboys will be a boring run-away. The Lions will need 135 yds of penalties against their oponent, plus a couple of would-be turnovers where the officials "inadverdently" blew a whistle or the replay fails to overturn the obviously bad call, to carry them to a last minute three-point victory.
Now that you know the outcome, look for a decent college football game between two top teams. |
American football isn’t extremely popular in Germany, but there exists both a local and a foreign fan base. From a google search, The Arc seems to be a sports bar showing NFL games http://www.whisky-emporium.com/thearc It might be best to contact them and ask whether the game is on.

Welll.... I want to see the game too. And I can't think of a better way to spend our anniversary than to have a nice meal somewhere, followed by watching the Cowboys put a whoopin' on the Seahawks. :)
Thanks for the suggestions; I'll email these places. |
And I can't think of a better way to spend our anniversary than to have a nice meal somewhere, followed by watching the Cowboys put a whoopin' on the Seahawks
All I can say is, "a woman after my own heart" (although in my case it would be either SF Giants baseball, or SJ Sharks hockey :) ) Have fun and have a great anniversary! |
You can tell them it's on KMS/ CableVista in Munich included in the sports package. :-)
11.90€ per month. |
The sports bar in the Marriott will definitely carry the games. They do have several TV screens there and - although not American and NOT a football fan - I enjoyed the atmosphere.
|
Ingo,
Your not a Dynamo fan? |
Bird,
LOL, I got caught ;-) Seriously, I used to be. And my heart bleeds seeing them play (poorly, btw) in the 3rd league. |
Another possibility is a British or Irish bar, most of which has Sky and Setanta satellite channels. American football is carried live on both platforms, College Football on Setanta, NFL on Sky Sports.
|
And you have the advantage of English (American) commentaries, rather than German!
|
Lol, you really think there would be german commentaries on NASN? :D :D
Of course all those broadcasts are English only. (As is the whole station) Sky isn't available legally for copyright reasons, but some places have viewing cards imported from the UK. |
NASN has broadcasting right for NFL on the continental Europe, but Sky has in UK and Ireland.
