Amboise

Has anyone been in this town in the Loire valley?. Was thinking of stopping there on our way to Paris after leaving Aix en Provence. Is it worth seeing?

Barbara: We spent about 3 hours in Amboise a couple of weekends ago on our way from Chartres to Montresor almost by mistake--we were driving along and stumbled upon it. The town is very cute and we spent some time walking throught the small streets and the chateau on the hill. I would definitely consider going back to Amboise and using it as a base for a tour of the Loire Valley. Have a great trip. Hans

We spent two nights and parts of two days in Amboise in June. Liked it alot. Quite a few restaurants and an impressive chateaux. We went out to see Chenonceaux from there and also Le Clos Luce (where Leonardo Davinci spent his last three years) is there. I haven't stayed other places in the Loire, but I think you will like Amboise.
Amboise is where Leonardo DaVinci is buried....in the little chaple of St. Hubert. We had a nice lunch nearby at the Anne d Bretagne Restaurant.

Amboise is a very nice town and well situated for seeing the Loire. I would not see it as a stop over place between Aix and Paris though as it is well out of the direct route. How long were you going to take between these points? and what route would you take? Remember that cemtral France is occupied by the Massif Central and the going is not rapid - you need to go south and up, or north, and across.

The town is very pretty; the chateau has a lot of history (the chapel where da Vinci is buried is on the grounds); the Clos du Luce (da Vinci's home) is very interesting - as a friend noticed, it had a very 'happy' feel to it, like Giverny. Her observation "maybe creating things leaves good vibes, unlike the castles we've visited, that all were cold and sad".
We had a nice, light lunch at the restaurant on the grounds of the Clos.
