Is Ambien a prescription drug? After recommendations on this forum, I've looked for it at Target and Walgreens, but no luck finding it. Unfortunately the pharamacist wasn't available at Walgreens. Does anyone know where I can get this sleep aid? Thanks

Sharmar,<BR><BR>Yes---Ambien is a prescription drug and cannot be purchased "over-the-counter".

Ambien is a prescription medication. You'll have to ask your Dr. for it. Try benedryl if you can't get to the Dr.

I personally find a big difference between Tylenol PM and other over-the-counter sleep aids and Ambien. I could sleep about 12 hours when I take Tylenol PM and it leaves me groggy in the morning. Ambien, on the other hand, helps me sleep but I can wake up any time and not feel groggy or drugged. So I really feel it is worth asking your doctor for.<BR><BR>I cannot stress enough that you should try Ambien at home before using it when flying. People have different responses. It is perfect for me, but it knocks my husband out.<BR><BR>You might request the 5mg pills (rather than 10) so you can take the smaller dose if that works for you. You can always take 2 if you need to.<BR>

I concur with Marilyn, Tylenol PM & Benadryl leave me feeling drugged out in the morning, but I wake up feeling refreshed after taking Ambien. But others on this board said Ambien left them feeling groggy to (although, I think those people generally were sensitive to meds anyway). So I imagine it affects people differently. For me, though, it's a miracle!

try two extra strength gravol - works like a charm for me and you don't need a prescription.

Ambien is a perscription SLEEPING pill- you do need a Doc's perscrip--<BR><BR>Good part-you do NOT wake up drugged like if you took a Valium

Just leave a voice mail for your doctor's office and tell them you are going to Europe and need Ambien for the flight. They'll call the prescription into the pharmacy for you. No office visit. It's a very common request.

Ambien works great if you can get a prescription. I give it all the time to early laboring woman that we send home. If you can sleep through contractions with this medication....it must be good. It comes in 5 mg and 10 mg. I'd suggest taking 1 5 mg and if that doesn't work, repeat a half an hour later with another 5 mg.
