Amber Room in St. Petersburg

Has anyone been to this? Any suggestions on how to get to it?

Fodor's says this: PETERHOF AND PUSHKIN SUMMER PALACES

A hydrofoil cruise on the Gulf of Finland to Peterhof's cascading fountains and lavish gardens gets you in an imperial mood. The ornate, golden interiors and recently reconstructed Amber Room of the 18th-century Catherine's Palace at Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo) offer a look into the extravagance of the Russian royal family.

But I can't find any other info. We'll be on a cruise and in St. Petersburg for 3 days. Thanks.

Info?

What kind of info are you looking for? Both Peterhof and Catherine's palace are among the 5 most visited attractions in SPb. There is oodles of info out there. www.tzar.ru, http://en.peterhofmuseum.ru

The Amber room is in Catherine's palace. http://tzar.ru/museums/palaces/c_atherine/amber_room

If you come by the Baltic cruise and do not have a visa, your cruise line should offer superficial but efficient excursions to these places, or, better still, look for a local tour company that works with cruise passengers (Alla tours, TJ tours, best guides, SPb tours, etc, etc, etc, ad infinitum). You will be herded around, always guided, so you do not really need to know how to get there - the guides will do it for you.

if you do have a visa - it's a different story.

Catherine's Palace is not actually in St. Petersburg -- it is just outside.

What search strategies are you using that have proven so ineffective? it shouldn't be difficult to get information on the Amber Room....

The Amber Room is an exact reproduction of the original one that the Nazis stole. The whereabouts of the original are unknown.

Thanks for the links. This is a silversea cruise. They offer a number of tours but don't specifically mention the Peterhof and Pushkin palaces or the amber room. There seem to be a number of Catherine Palaces.

You don't have to use a tour from the cruise line. You can book with an independent local company -- there are several good ones.
