Amalfi - Pompeii - Positano - Sorrento in one day?

Hi, I've been digging on every forum trying to find guidance on this - if we are on the Amalfi Coast for one day in mid-May (dropped off in Amalfi at 8 am on a cruise, picked up at 11 pm in Sorrento), is it possible to go Amalfi - Pompeii - Positano - Sorrento in a day? Is it worth it? We figured it'd be best to go to Pompeii first so that we could be in Positano in time for lunch. Does this timing seem reasonable or am I crazy? Is it not worth it to try to squeeze in Pompeii? Help!!

9 am - leave Amalfi port
10:30 am - arrive in Pompeii
1 pm - leave Pompeii, drive to Positano
2 pm - arrive in Positano, eat lunch, walk around
5 pm - leave Positano, drive to Sorrento
6 pm - arrive in Sorrento

Only with a good local driver and some good weather.

Fully agree with bobthenavigator, who is an expert. Are you planning a car rental? hiring a private driver?
you will end exhausted, but of course it can be done; enjoying something, well this is another thing...

I am sure I will be the only one to tell you to do it. We were on a Med cruise last year, and had the same choice. We and my sister and husband all decided to go ahead and do the ship excursion. We thought it sounded crazy, but we are all sooo glad we did it.

Yes, it is a long day (I think our time in port may have been longer), and we covered a lot of ground. But, we got to see a lot. If we ever decide to go back, we have had a great overview.
We were also glad we were on a bus, since the coast highway was so crowded. We are usually the types who like to drive ourselves, but given our time constraints, we couldn't have done it all otherwise. It was great.

Hiring a private driver...does that change opinions? Are you guys saying we'll be exhausted because too much driving time or doing too much? I was under the impression Pompeii is serious sightseeing, but Positano / Sorrento would be just strolling / shopping....no?

CW2012:
Hiring a private driver or doing a tour makes things much better and easier, they knoow the routes and you travel enjoying the landscapes.
Definitely a long but doable day.

Lots of backtracking here.

I'd suggest

Arrive Amalfi -- ferry to Sorrento -- admire Positano on the way ( some of the ferries stop there -- you might be able to fit in a quick walk between boats, or just ogle from deck).

From Sorrento (ignore), visit Pompeii. Lunch on site.

Return to Sorrento for dinner and a stroll.
