Amalfi or Praiano?

Any thoughts about whether to stay in Amalfi or Praiano? Am trying to decide between 2 hotels, 1 in each location. Alternatively, does anyone know anything about the Miramalfi hotel in Amalfi or the Tramonto d'Oro hotel in Praiano? Any advice?
Also wondering the best/quickest way to get from Rome to Amalfi or Praiano (wherever I decide)??

Hi Jz,

>... best/quickest way to get from Rome to Amalfi or Praiano...

Train to Salerno.

Ferry to Amalfi.

Sita bus to Praiano. Buy your ticket at a tabac shop on the square near the buses.

You can also continue on the ferry to Positano and take the Orange bus from the dock to Praiano. You buy your ticket on the bus.

We very much enjoyed our stay in Praiano at www.lesirene.com

Have you thought about Positano?

Both Hotel Buca di Bacco and Hotel Poseidon fit your price range.

they aren't available and they're both well over $400.00. If I can keep it under $400.00, i'd be very happy. Have you heard of either of those two hotels I mentioned?

Sorry JZ, I haven't heard of either places but after looking at the tripadvisor reviews I would go with the Hotel Tramonto d'Oro.

My wife and I have only stayed in Positano.

Forgot to mention that we stayed in Ravello as well.

thanks for your diligence and input - really appreciate it. One last thing - what do you think about just staying in Sorrento? Too touristy or good base for exploring the coast?

I just returned from a thrilling 5 nights in Amalfi and would highly recommend the town as a base. You can read the details in my trip report here. The Miramalfi has an excellent position on the sea about an 8 minute walk from the Duomo and main square of Amalfi; I think it would be a great place to stay, pending a check of reviews. We stayed at the Hotel Floridiana, within the town, which we loved; a superior room is 140 Euro. There is no sea view but this was not an issue for us.

If you plan to make day trips Amalfi is a much more convenient base than Praiano, as there is a bus terminus as well as ferry connections. Praiano would have been too small to keep us occupied for the time we were there, as we like having a good range of restaurants within walking distance, to name one factor. But that hotel has a great reputation, so....,this is really an instance where there are many great options..

Hi jz,

Sorrento is good if you want to visit Capri, Pompeii, Vesuvius and Naples.

Praiano and Amalfi are better for the AC and Paestum.

We've stayed in Praiano 4 times and just love it. No crowds, quiet, fantastic views, and great hotels and restaurants.
We've never stayed in the hotels you're looking at, but we've stayed in either the Hotel Onda Verde and the Hotel Hargherita. Loved them both, but the Margherita is very well priced, has a pool, and the food was so good we ate there every night.
We always take the train to Naples and have Salvatore Lucibello meet us from DriveAmalfi. It's about 110 Euros from the station to Praiano, but it's easy, convenient, and comfortable.
