Amalfi or bust

I am planning 4-5 days on the Amalfi coast in Sept '99, but cannot find lodging in Positano (my first choice). Any recommended alternatives? Ravello (hotel Palumbo?), Sorrento or Amalfi??? Please include hotel suggestions in the ***+ category. Thanks.

NO, no, no, I'm sorry Justin, but you just have to stay a couple of days in Positano. I will not hear otherwise. It has a charm & unique quality that is not replicated elsewhere. <BR>I see that you posted under Honeymoon Dilemma and so, presumably, you've done a search on the Forum under "Positano" and also, checked out several of the following websites for hotels??? <BR> <BR>http://www.travel-italy.com/hotels/ <BR>http://www.initaly.com/regions/campania/hotels.htm <BR>http://starnet.it/covo/welcome.html <BR>http://www.premier.net/~Italy/posit.htm <BR> <BR>

We enjoyed the Cappucini Covento in Amalfi (****). There is a good web site for it; do a search (it's part of something called amalfi.net). Ravello was my personal favorite, but it is a bit more remote than Amalfi.

In the *** category, highly recommend the Hotel La Tonnarella in Sorrento. It sits right on the Marina Grande overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea. Its an easy walk into town. The food is excellent. Senora Gargiulo oversses everything. Were were there two years ago and paid about $100 a night. Tile work is beautiful. Don't miss it. <BR>

Justin, I agree with Robin. I would definitely stay in Positano. I wasn't that impressed with Amalfi. I did not go to Ravello so will not comment. I stayed between Positano and Amalfi close to Praino. Gorgeous view, but required drivng into Positano which was inconvenient and not inviting especially at night. If possible, I would change my trip dates to get a hotel in Positano. We onsidered Positano the jewel on the Amalfi coast. An alternative if you can't book 4-5 days in Positano is to stay wherever you can, i.e., Sorrento, Ravello or wherever for a night or two and then get into Positano for 3-4 days. We were there in October so I think September will be a great time to be there.

Justin, I stayed in Praiano and loved it. We were visiting family, so didn't go to Positano except to drive through. There are 2 hotels in Praiano, Tramonte d'Oro on the ocean side of the road and Le Fioriere across the street. d'Oro is a 4 star and Le Fioriere is a 3. The rooms are lovely, but all face the road. In March is was dead quiet and not a tourist in sight (except for us). Phone: 089.87203. Fax 089.874343. ' Oro can be found on the internet, but you won't find Fioriere anywhere, so it might be a good bet.

Must Agree with others. My wife would leave me if I said we were going to Italy and skipping Positano. Our favorite B&B is La Fenice. Favorite restuarant, De Leone just outside town heading back towards Amalfi. September should be perfect (just a little crowded) <BR>
