Amalfi Naples Positano
 

Hello Everyone :)

I need an advice for Naples and Amalfi Coast. We have 4 days in the beginning of July and we are planning to spend a day in Naples and three days somewhere close to Positano to see around and spend some time in the beach. We do not have much time
to explore every corner of Amalfi coast but it would be nice to spend some time in the beach plus see around the daily local life.
I therefore need a good neighborhood in Naples to see arounf and never been there.
And a nice town easy to reach positano and around. We are not planning to rent a car. And most hotels in Positano are either very expensive or located on top of a hill which could be a bit difficult for us.
Any suggestions ?

I think Amalfi would probably be your best bet for having a beach, easy access to other towns via ferry & being less vertical than Positano and other towns. Amalfi is relatively flat comparatively. Minori and Maiori are also flat with beaches (Maiori's is quite big) but they are a bit out of the way for visiting other towns. Be advised that the AC doesn't have sandy beaches, they are pebble beaches (except in Maiori, which is sandy).

From Amalfi you can easily get up to Ravello via bus or taxi for exploring (which is flat once you get there, and beautiful) and over to Positano or Capri via ferry. I *think* you might find lower prices in Amalfi than Positano. If you are traveling this July you'll have to just take what's left though.

It's also a beautiful walk IME from Amalfi the few kilometers UP to Ravello - maybe bus up and walk down - one path zigzags thru vineyards.

If you go from Naples to Amalfi, I suggest you take the train to Salerno and then the boat from there to Amalfi.

Have you considered spending all four nights in Sorrento and doing day trips to Naples and Positano/Amalfi? Probably less expensive then staying in Positano, the center of town is mostly flat, and it would only involve staying in one hotel. Day trips in both directions (to Naples and to the Amalfi/Positano area are easy. Both the bus and the boat from Sorrento to Positano/Amalfi are 'attractions' in themselves so doing them more than once is not a waste of time. You could go by boat one day and bus the next.

Actually you are right. It makes much more sense. Have you been in Salerno? Do you think Salerno is better for day trips as well? Since we catvh a train from rome, it might be easier for us to reach Salerno with a direct train from Rome. But i’ll search how i get to Sorrento from Rome as well.

Salerno is a good idea, that would be my choice between Salerno & Sorrento (I’m not really a fan of Sorrento myself). You mentioned beaches, not sure quite how important they are to you but Sorrento doesn’t really have one. I’d guess you’ll find more/lower cost accommodations options in Salerno than Sorrento, as Sorrento is very popular and you’re looking kinda late for high season.

Salerno is not better for day trips most take here -Pomeii, Capri and quite a way from Positano or Amalfi which make better bases - Sorrento great base but yes not the dreamiest town with no view of seaside from much of town.

Out of of the bunch, Capri is furthest from Salerno, true. Not sure how one would reach Pompeii any quicker from Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento than they would from Salerno though. Fastest train between Salerno-Pompeii is 20 minutes, plus a 15 minute walk to entrance.

Salerno may not make a *better* base than Sorrento but it doesn’t make a *lesser* base either. Both have pros/cons. Based only on the info given in the op, Salerno seems better suited.

I might not want to stay in either Salerno or Sorrento again (I've stayed in both) but I think Sorrento is prettier. JMO

I would probably stay in Amalfi or even Atrani, which I thought was really cute and has a little beach. I stayed in Ravello which is gorgeous but a bit more remote and i don't think would be a good match for your goals.

For Naples, how about someplace in the center? I stayed by Piazza Bellini. It's very crowded, tiny streets, people out and about all the time, but atmospheric and central to many sites.

We stayed in Sorento for 4 days. The accommodation was much cheaper than any of the cities on the Amalfy Coast and we had plenty of time to see Amalfi, Ravello and Positano. I recommend you take the boat at least one of the way as its so much nicer.
The other good thing about Sorento is you can see Capri via ferry very easily from there (plus Sorento itself is worth seeing). If you have the time, my big recommendation is Procida. It's an island a bit of the tourist beaten track and that time of year that's a real plus. We loved it there and there are even some decent restaurants to be found.

Stayed in Sorrento several days as a great utilitarian base but failed to see anything more than a fairly modern tourist town - curious as to what I missed? Staying in Sorrento is great but if not I'd pass on making special efforts to see it - again what did I miss?
