Amalfi Coast Trip Planning
Hello All,
My wife and I are planning a trip to Italy for April 16th-23rd. Yes, the first weekend is Easter weekend. We would like to see Capri, Pompeii, Positano and Ravello.
Should we stay in one location, as a base, and sight see from there? Or should we spend a day or two in each? Also, what can we expect for closures on Easter Sunday and Monday?
We are in our mid-30's and somewhat experienced travelers. Any help is appreciated.
Matt

Definitely base it - Sorrento would be the most convenient for your plans - train to Pompeii, boat to Capri (don't neglect Ischia, an island by Capri that many like just as much or more, Blue Grotto or not) and take the dramatic Amalfi Coast buses to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. There is a terrific hike up a lush valley from Amalfi to clifftop Ravello. don't think Easter Sun or Mon much of an impact here as the week before Easter is the start of Italy's tourist season and most tourist-oriented shops, etc. should be at full tilt. Maybe someone who has been there at Easter can shed better light on this.

Unfortunately I don't know about Easter weekend specifically, however we did many of the activities you mention (Pompeii, Sorrento, Positano) on our recent trip in mid-May. As is the case over Easter weekend, transportation options were more limited than they are during the peak season in mid-summer.
See my trip report for details on how we got around -

If you are in the Amalfi area during the Easter weekend, make a reservation right now in Sorrento. It is a real experience being in Sorrento on this weekend. They have several eery ancient processions of hooded marchers to mark Easter. It is quite an experience.
As for staying in one place or several, we split our time between Sorrento and Praiano (between Positano and Amalfi).
You can check out my web page describing our visit to Amalfi in 2000:
