Amalfi Coast Questions

This is my first trip to the amalfi coast. I am arriving Rome FCO. I plan to take the train to Naples. I understand I have to take a train from FCO to Roma Termini. Is that Where I get a train to Naples? I was in the Roma Termini four years ago and I remember it to be quite confusing. What is the train and number to Naples. Should I purchase the ticket before I leave home? I plan to stay at the Weber Ambassador in Capri for two to three nights. Any comments on this hotel or the length of stay on Capri? I plan to stay at the Hotel Pasitea in Positano for four nights. (at this late date I could not get a reservation at any of the hotels recommended on this site) Any comments on this hotel? Also I would appreciate any recommendation for where to stay the last night in Italy. A hotel at or near the Airport? (plane leaves at noon) or stay on the Amalfi coast and worry if I make the plane. Your replies would be most appreciated and I hope I can return the favor when I return

Hi js,

Yes, you get the train to Naples at Roma TE.

After you leave customs at FCO, follow the signs to the Leonardo da Vinci Express.

Here is a link to a map of the Roma TE.

There are many trains a day to Naples. The track number will be displayed on the large message board at the head of the tracks.

You can purchase your train tickets for the same price as in Italy at www.trenitalia.com.

See this link for instructions Trenitalia Tickets Online

For a noon flight out of Rome, I suggest that you stay in the city. Staying on the AC is strongly discouraged.

Are you going to Capri or Positano from Naples?

Tall order! Roma Termini is indeed where you catch the train to Naples. There are trains leaving every hour for Naples from Rome. All have different train numbers and are different types of trains. Wait until you get there to purchase.

You don't say when or during what season you will be doing this trip, and you don't say what time you will be arriving in Rome. Answers to these questions are important for both train schedules and recommendations on how long to stay in a place.

We just returned from the Amalfi Coast, and spent two nights and two days in Capri. That was sufficient to see the gist of what you might want to see, but maybe not if you want to relax. The Weber, I understand is not in Capri Town at the top of the hill; rather is down by the Marina Grande. It has not gotten positive reviews, but I can't comment, having not seen it or been there.

Haven't heard of the Hotel Pasitea in Positano, sorry.

I wouldn't chance spending the last night in Positano, since you will have to do a lot of traveling by different public forms of public transportation and the possibility of a train and/or bus strike. Stay in Rome your last night.

OK, multiple questions. ;-)

Train to Rome Termini - correct, that's the way you would go.

Termini to Naples - yes, that's where you would pick up the train.

Train Number - there are any number of trains a day to Naples, everything from Eurostars to regional trains. You should look at the train schedules on the Trenitalia.com web site for the times and numbers. Which platforms could change so you'll need more info when you arrive there.

Buy now or in Italy - I would buy there, almost all agents here are going to add a charge. There you'll avoid that and getting a ticket there is not difficult. I would probably do that at the airport station where you can be away from the crowd at Rome Termini. You should be able to get better ideas of the platforms then too.

Weber Ambassador - excellent choice, 2-3 days is good, gives you enough time to go exploring and not so much that you run out of things to do. Only complaint I ever had about the Weber is calling for reservations and they gave me the brush off and told me to call back closer to when I wanted to be there for reservation cancellations. They implied there would be no problem at all, until I spoke with them two days before and they said no way. Just a bad impression of their reservation management, not the hotel itself.

Pasitea - considered going there but don't know enough about it. Seemed good enough to me from my recollections of my research.

Last night - there are very limited choices near the airport other than the expensive Hilton. I did the Euro Hotel two years ago because we had a 7AM flight out and absolutely had to. It was OK, but otherwise I proably would stay in Rome. Amalfi to Fiumicino by noon is cutting it too close for me. Take your time and get to Rome the day before. Then it will be leisurely to the airport by noon.

Ira, I am going to Capri from Naples.SurferGirl I Will be arriving the first week in September. I plan to stay 2-3 nights in Capri and then 4-5 nights in Positano. Also, if I spend the last night in Rome any hotel recommendations where a transfer to FCO would be easy? Again your help is much appreciated

Hi jsf,

It's easier to take the boat to Capri from Naples than to take the train to Sorrento and then get on the boat.

Take a cab from the train station to Molo Beverello.

The water should still be warm then and, this is a matter of personal taste, but we loved Capri and wish we'd stayed longer. By the skin of our teeth we actually got into the Blue Grotto (see my trip report), and if that's a priority for you, you have to remember it is not always open.

We stayed at Hotel Pasitea last year. Very nice rooms with a small terrace. I think cost was around 160E in late May. Great for watching the sunset and sipping some of the fine wines of the South. ( Yes all you Tuscanites, Campania produces some of Italy's great wines)

It isi right a the bus stop for the circulator, I think the cost is 1E. Good breakfasts and a pleasant staff. Good restaurant a short walk down hill, Il Fornillo, and a fun bar at top of via Pasitea, where coast highway intersects.
