Amalfi Coast Logitics

We will be in this area for 4 nights and our trying to iron out a few wrinkles. We plan to spend a day on Capri, some time touring the Amalfi Coast, and would like to visit Pompei.

In looking at lodging (RS book, tripadvisor, venere) it seems that the best prices/options are at the two towns up above Positano (Montepertuso and Nocelle), bt I am wondering how inconvenient those locations would be for what we want to do.

We will have a car and are not intimidated by the roads, but also understand that it adds a lot of travel time.

How long does it take to drive from Positano to Sorrento?
Can you walk (with relative ease) from Montepertuso to Positano for dinner?
Is parking available in Sorrento if we drove in for a day? What about Positano?

Any direction of ideas anyone can pass on would be very helpful.

Thanks

What time of year is your trip? Traffic and ease of parking will vary by month.

Montepertuso to Positano might be a walk, but Positano to Montepertuso would be a hike. I'd take a taxi back after dinner.

Hi ty

>How long does it take to drive from Positano to Sorrento?
see www.viamichelin.com

>Can you walk (with relative ease) from Montepertuso to Positano for dinner?
downhill is a little easier than uphill.
I believe that many restos in M will pick you up and take you home. Check with your hotel.

>Is parking available in Sorrento if we drove in for a day? What about Positano?
Yes. I don't think that cars are permitted in Positano except for cabs.
Check with your hotel about this. They might have parking.

Have you considered Praiano?
We very much liked http://lesirene.com/
I think they can arrange for parking for you.

Enjoy your visit.

You can hike back down to Positano from Montepertuso along a path that starts near the church in the town square- IF you are in great shape- but you most certainly can't easily walk between the two. There are lots of twisty, winding roads, traffic, and no shoulder on those roads. Plus the walk itself could take about 30 minutes at a good pace.

A lot of the restaurants will pick you up at your hotel in Positano if you want to dine in Montepertuso, but frankly, this past visit we were most unimpressed with our return visit to some of them. The restaurants in and around town were much better and didn't involve a 15 minute drive in the dark up to the top of the mountain.

Parking in many of the towns along the coast is a big problem especially in the late spring/summer months.

It would be most inconvenient, I think to be based in Montepertuso for what you want to see and do on the coast.

The drive between Positano and Sorrento takes about 30 minutes, depending on time of day and traffic.

Positano can take 30 minutes or can take over an hor - dependng on time o fyear and traffic I think staying in one of the towns way above the coast is a really bad idea. These towns are cut into the side of a cliff and the climb from the coast road up is a real bear unless you are in excellent condition and used to hiking, There is no way I would consider it on foot - never mind the potential issues of walking along a road with no sidewalks.

When in the area we stay in Sorrento - which is a larger town with a relatively flat center, Much bigger choice of hotels and restaurants and easier access to Pompeii (train or car), Capri (from the town dock) and down the coast (by bus or ferry). We also have a car and drive the coast road and to Pompeii - but we go in late May - and the hotel we use has private parking. We have parked in other towns with no problem - but we are from NYC and used to parallel parking on either side in space just bigger than the car. And circling for 10 or 15 minutes to find a place to put the car is normal for us. (As is always folding in the mirrors when you park.)

nytraveler, where do you stay in Sorrento?

We are going to be there in mid-May.

We stay at the Excelsior Grand Vittoria - which is a beautiful hotel set in lovely grounds - but not in the budget range you seem to be looking for - even with the discounts they offer in May. However, I'm sure Sorrento has many pleasant hotels in more modest price ranges.
