Go to Salerno by bus or ferry, train to Paestum. Lots of threads on this board give the detailed instructions. Search for Paestum and go back a few years.. Just be sure to buy round trip ticket in Salerno as you may not be able to purchase the return in Paestum.

I enjoyed Herculaneum far more than Pompei, to tell you the truth. It's smaller and more intact. If you can do both (short train trip from one to the other), go to Herculaneum first. We don't use live guides because we speak two different languages, but if you really want to get the most out of it and are not keen on reading the guide books yourself, you'll find plenty of guides offering their services. Just see how well they speak English before you sign up!
We drove to Paestum, arriving late morning. It is quite fabulous. BTW, we had lunch at an unassuming-looking restaurant on the roundabout just before you get to Paestum which was delicious. We had an astonishingly copious antipasto misto di mare for two for 20 euro. I don't know the name of the restaurant unfortunately, but it's just opposite the Hera 2 temple.

Hi I am planning a similar trip in May 2014 for my honeymoon. Can you please give suggestions when you return? Thanks!

I'm joining in too, as our italian class is headed for Sorrento in February '14.

we will have a huge advantage over many people as out teacher is both italian and very familiar with Sorrento - this will be the 4th party of students that she has led to this area. we will be attending language classes in the morning, and doing excursions in the afternoons, mostly by public transport, i'm sure, so i may have some tips for others when we get back.

OTOH, I'm hoping to pick up some restaurant recommendations for Sorrento and other places as we will be eating out for one of two evenings, though mostly we will be eating with the families with whom we're going to stay.

buon viaggio, bluesphee!

Hi all,

I am writing a quick update from my absolutely gigantic and wonderful balcony of room 32 in the Villa Rosa in Positano as I drink my mandatory cappaccino (how will I survive without these when I return?). I don't want to spend the time writing up elaborate details now, but I will certainly share everything when I return home in 5 days (probably will take me a week to get back into the swing of things and write-up). We are headed to Ravello soon and debating on whether or not to take up an entire day to go to Paestum since we love this so much. Such a rough life Looking forward to sharing my tips with others when we return since all of you have helped me so much.
