I agree with Blueeyed cod. We started visiting Positano when my kids were very young and they never had a problem with the stairs, though the heat could be a contender in July/August.

You can either follow the road down to town/beach, or base yourselves at ground level so that you don't have to deal with stairs/steep climb.

About SARCENO D'ORO: We really love the food, but you should be aware that some of the tables are right on the street, so sometimes the traffic on VIA PASITEA seems perilously close!

Considering hiring a boat to go around Capri with a lunch stop somewhere.

Has anyone done this and the approx cost for doing so?

I've hired a private boat and gone around the island. It was 120 euro for about five hours. The hotel organised it (we stayed at La Floridiana) so I couldn't give you a name but it was so worth it - he pulled into to little green coves and grottoes so we jumped out and swam. The boat had a fresh water hose with shower attachment so we didn't get all salty. We had lunch on board (we brought our own picnic with wine). It was a beautiful way to see Capri from the water.

There are many private operators who do this sort of tour. check www.capri.net

Check out WHALES DI WENDY in Capri. They are based at Marina Grande, and offer private/semi private tours of the island. Highly recommend them, but a private tour needs to be booked in advance.

AND check out any decent guidebook about your options -- you have many! :-)

Just got a quote back from one of the boat charter companies listed on the capri.net site, 180E for 2 hours, 310E for 4 hours or 370E plus fuel for 8 hours.

Hmmm that sounds expensive - check a few more - the going rate these days is around 150 euro for three hours. You won't need the boat for the whole day by the way - Capri is very small and takes about two hows of slow navigation to circle completely. I would shop around.
The alternative is to go on a tour boat but with a very small group.

Thanks

Our hotel also replied saying they too can organise that so I think we'll wait till we get there and organise.

We will be there for 3 nights being Fri, Sat and Sun. Should we make reservations for lunch and dinner at various eateries now or wait till we get there? I am concerned being a weekend, some places could be difficult to get in.

I guess it wouldn't hurt, especially if you want to eat at some of the more popular restaurant. Your hotel will be able to advise.

I have never made a restaurant reservation until I arrive in Positano, and I nearly always am there the last week of June. I usually just stop by in the afternoon and make dinner reservations for that evening or the following evening. Or if I am being lazy on the beach all day and totally forget, I stop by on my way back to the apartment and make the reservation. Even at Da Adolfo, I just call in the morning for my lunch reservation.

If it is some place I REALLY want to enjoy (like Hotel Le Sirene), then I may call a couple of days in advance. But it is all very laid back.

I don't think reservations are really necessary for lunch, but dinner can be a little tricky unless you don't mind eating late. I've found that many restaurants get booked for the earlier dining hours.

ekc Apr 14th, 2015 10:17 AM

Good point WWK. I usually don't eat dinner in Pos until 8:30-9:00 pm.

WWK Apr 14th, 2015 12:29 PM

Me neither, ekc. But since the OP is traveling with a young son, that may make a difference.

BOOKMARK

swagman Apr 14th, 2015 09:35 PM

thx WWK, early dinner option is a prerequisite for us. 7-7.30pm seating time is preferred.

ekc Apr 15th, 2015 08:42 AM

Then you will want to make reservations. But you can wait until you get there to make them.

Judy Apr 15th, 2015 09:39 AM

We had a 3 hr boat tour arranged by our hotel. We booked a late lunch at Da Luigi ai Faraglioni and had the boat drop us there.

We used the restaurant boat to take us back.

WWK Apr 15th, 2015 11:00 AM

I usually agree with ekc, especially over our obsession with Positano, but I think you should go ahead and make dinner reservations ahead if you need specific times. The summer months are very busy, and you don't want a cranky family on your hands if you can't get in to eat before 9 or so.

ekc Apr 15th, 2015 12:49 PM

OK, OK, better safe than sorry. :-) Just don't make your reservations too far in advance, or there is a chance they may get lost (been there, done that).
