Amalfi Coast in November?
 

We are planning our trip to souther italy in November. Is the trafic better o the AC in NOvember or does the weather make it more dangerous? Do the ferries run at all?

I'ts not the best time to go to the AC. The weather can be rainy and cold, and many establishments ( restaurants, hotels,shops) start their reduced winter hours schedule. I assume this is probably true for the ferries, too.

I don't think any boats run to Amalfi in winter, though there are limited services between Sorrento and Capri. Very few restaurants or hotels will be open in Amalfi in winter.

The boats may ply if there is sunshine or if the waters are not choppy. We were at AC in the early part of this month, and it was cloudy on the day that we had allocated for the Capri boat-trip from Amalfi. The boats weren't running then - but the roads were remarkably empty, and it was no problem at all to stop whereever we wanted to catch a good view.

OK - sounds like we are being talked out of November on the Amalfi Coast. We have to be in Malta on October 29th so we want to make the best use of 2 weeks of travel after that. Any suggestions? Makes no sense to go so far and then just come home. Thanks

Europe is quite far north, most of it is north of New York, so late October and early November are not the best months for travelling there IF you want warm weather. Rain is pretty common in the late fall months as well. Go to weatherbase.com and worldclimate.com for info.
I agree that coastal areas are not at their best in November and see from your other posts that you have been to northern Italy already. You mention Sicily on your other post, would be OK in November as it is much further south than Amalif so would be maybe a little warmer, although not really the optimal month.

I think Spain would be good choice as you would be out of the really hot weather, although you may have some rain. So much to see and do there in 2 weeks. Paris and London are pretty much great any time of year as weather is not such a factor in those cities.

Turkey would be good in November, coolish weather but pleasant, beach areas may be a bit cold but there is so much more to see and do there than just beaches.

Egypt would be excellent in November, as would Jordan (i.e. Petra). Although I am not a big fan of Dubai, the weather in excellent in November and this could be combined with a trip to Jordan. You might want to post on the Middle East board.

Athens would be good, but the Greek isles would be cool, so you may want to save this for better weather.

We had a very nice time last November, staying in Sorrento for 5 days. We went to Capri, Naples, Pompeii, and Paestum. The Sorrento part of our trip report starts here:

Obviously you aren't going to get beach weather, and we did find many restaurants and shops closed, but the up side was that Pompeii and especially Paestum were quite uncrowded. Both places were highlights of our trip (which also included about a week in Rome).

The reponses have been very helpful. We are from Oregon so we never expect the coast to dry or the weather to be warm. We will keep refining as we read all your comments. Thanks

We had a perfect vacation, including weather, along the Amalfi Coast in November. It is not wise to generalize from one experience, but we couldn't have wished for better weather. I did not notice many shops that were closed, but I DID notice that we did not have to deal with tons of people. PJK
