Amalfi coast in 4 days starting today, plz advise.

Thanks to this board, I have had a good trip so far,spent 3 days in Rome and currently on train to Naples. Have 4-5 days in Amalfi.

Please help plan itinerary, have no idea except that Sorrento and Capri are good...
Should be stay overnight in Naples tonight or tho direct from Naples to Sorrento.

2 adults, 2 kids 4 and 6 yr old.
I know it's too late to ask but you never know, some advice can come in handy...so far we have heard that Naples isn't great with kids so will probably go direct to Sorrento ..

Where are you staying? In Amalfi itself? I enjoyed a number of things but I went solo, not sure what kids would like other than lots of water time. It will be too cold for the ocean - does your hotel have a pool?

Capri is gorgeous and the hikes (walks, really) on the eastern side of the island are gentle. The 6 yr old should be fine, I am not sure how much stamina a four year old would have.

If you want to see the Amalfi Coast, then I would suggest you stay on the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento is near (45 minutes) but not on the AC. The ferries are running now, so it is easy to travel between Positano/Amalfi/Salerno via ferry, and visit Capri.

Positano is always my choice when staying on the AC, as it is the most picturesque IMO and has the best selection of beaches.

If the weather is nice, you may consider a trip down to Paestum to see the Greek temples and visit a mozzarella farm.

With limited time that you have, I suggest going to Amalfi Coast without stopping in Naples. We stayed in Positano and took day trips from there. Ravello is beautiful and Capri is magical - we stayed in Capri for two nights.

Personally, I would be fine with kids in Naples, but I would probably stay in Sorrento, because the downtown area is nice and flat for walking and there are lots of restaurants and gelato places. There are easy connections to other places from Sorrento.

Do you not have any hotel reservations there yet? IMHO, it is still too cold there to worry about a pool.

Honestly, I would probably skip Capri, but see Pompeii and take the ferry down the coast to see Positano and Amalfi. Herculaneum is also interesting and not too bad for walking with kids. Center of Amalfi is flatter. Positano is all steps.

You know better how your kids will be, but the they might enjoy the ferries more than the busses.

For Pompeii, take plenty of water and sunscreen.

There are only 2 ferries per day from Sorrento to Positano, so you have to be very careful about your schedule if you plan on visiting the AC from Sorrento.

Pompeii - and an umbrella. Much better than a hat - keeps the sun off and keeps you cool(er).

I love Naples and am obsessed with Positano, but at this time of year with kids along, I'd probably opt for Sorrento. Especially since you've expressed an interest in Pompeii, which is a quick train ride from Sorrento.

About Capri: There's a wonderful tour company called WHALES DI WENDY, based at the port, which does one-day excursions around the island, tailored to your personal tastes. You can e-mail or call ahead to arrange a half or whole day tour. Highly recommend them!

Depending on your budget, you might want to consider a driver/tour guide for a day or half day tour of the coast. That way you don't have to worry about boat or bus schedules, and can stop when you want or need to with the kids. We have used Guemar Travel and also tourofitaly, both based in Sorrento, but there are other drivers often recommended on this forum, too.

We did decide to continue to Sorrento without stopping in Naples, checked into a cute B&B palazzo starace, with a balcony facing the Main Street ..great location, it started raining so just had a nice dinner and back to hotel for a good night sleep . Will go to amalfi coast tomorrow morning, have to check ferry schedule..don't know if we should spend on a guide as weather not looking good, let's see..

fly2 - while you're in Sorrento, i suggest that you spend one dinner at the Leone Rosso just across the square from the station. We had a couple of meals there in our week in Sorrento in February, and they were pretty good.

also your kids may like the great gelateria along the main street with a fantastic presepe [nativity scene] based on the statue of the risen Christ in Buenos Aires, which is all to do with the forthcoming [soccer] world cup in Argentina.

good luck with the weather and your trip to Amalfi tomorrow. A wet weather alternative would be to hop on the train to Naples - the National museum of archeology is definitely worth the trip. if you click on my screen-name you can find my trip report from our stay in February which gives details of the trips we did, including the one to Naples.

According to the Coop Sant Andrea website, the first ferry leaves Sorrento for Positano at 10:30. The last ferry leaves Positano for Sorrento at 5:00.

According to my weather app, it is supposed to just be windy in Positano tomorrow. :-)

I would always choose Positano, if it were an option! Got engaged there.
