I'm leaving This thursday, the 21st. I need to make a decision on touring the amalfi coast. What did you decide? I'd like to do the drive one way (either by limo or van or bus) and return another way. I don't want to waste a lot of time on the boat. I'd like to have some flexability too. PLEASE HELP.

Eks,

It took me 10 years and 3 trips, but I finally got a lemon pattern piece! I did my shopping in Ravello (didn't go to Vietre). I bought a gorgeous large platter and had it shipped home. Name of the shop was Ceramiche de Arte (SP?). Gorgeous pieces!

Pam - actually on the coast in the summer months, a boat may very well be your fastest option!

Hi, We returned from Italy end of April. We did a bus tour from our Hotel in Sorrento. We had some reservations about it but we wanted to see the coast in one day. The tour was great. We did NOT stop at any of the ceramics ,etc stores. Drove along the top of Positano (When I saw how steep and difficult it was to access I was just as happy not to go down) Spent ample time in Amalfi (lovely) the suppled lunch was delicious and included wine then on to another small town before reaching Ravello. If you are staying in Sorrento, this would be the bus tour the Hotel offers. We paid E47.50 per head and had a great day with a really good guide. We have been on heaps of tours over the years. This was one of the best. If you do it, make sure YOU SIT ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE BUS for the views. I know it doesnt sound right but that is the side for the view.

Angela (GoJ)-Thanks for the info. I had contacted Gianni as well, but you had a much more detailed response which is very very useful. I think that's what I'll do. What are you planning?

Pawsha-Thanks for the info on the tour. The tour sounds great but I would kick myself if I didn't spend some time in Positano as well. Since I only have one day, probably better I do my own tour so I can control the time somewhat. Of we can change our mind when we get there. I asked the bus tour driver and he said to let the hotel know the night before. If we do go with it, I can always go into Positano for the evening I guess.

Great info!

Thanks.

Also, I did check the Metrodelmare schedule from Sorrento to Amalfi: one leaves at 7:30 am and one leaves at 9:25. The il Nido's shuttle starts at 8, so I guess we'll have a relaxed breakfast before heading out. The trip takes approx 1 hour.

GoJumbos Jun 19th, 2007 12:44 PM

Hi P6-
I think at this point we're leaning towards doing it on our own, in light of budget and also wanting to just enjoy it on our own, and at our own pace. We'll likely do what you're doing--- take the 9:25 ferry from Sorrento to Amalfi; spend an hour or so in Amalfi and then head up to Ravello; we'll try to take the bus up but if the bus is too crowded or doesn't mesh with our schedule, then we'll consider a taxi (I read somewhere on these boards that it costs about 20 Euro). I'm thinking we'll explore Ravello and have a later lunch there. Then, we'll take the bus (or taxi) back down to Amalfi, and the ferry (or bus?) to Positano, for early evening and dinner. I need to do some more digging to see what time the ferries and bus service runs until (any ideas)? Also need to find out what the last pick up is from Il Nido (have you heard, by chance?) I do have one question for you--where did you come across the schedule for metrodelmar? I tried the link given to me by Gianni at Il Nido, but it didnt work the first time, and then took me to a completely different website when I tried earlier today... Would love the link or schedule if you could post it. Thanks! PS-when do you leave for your trip? Best,
Angela

LAwoman Jun 19th, 2007 01:41 PM

Angela,

We took the bus from Amalfi to Ravello, for Ravello to Amalfi we shared a taxi with another couple. We split a fare of about 30E. (They approached us).

If the bus from Amalfi to Ravello isn't working out for you it would probably be pretty easy to find a couple to share with, people will be lined up in the square waiting.

P67742 Jun 19th, 2007 06:08 PM

Great. Thanks for the info.

Angela, I'll send you all my links and a more detailed plan once I get to work tomorrow. All my files are there.

I leave for my trip on July 2nd, arriving Naples July 3rd. can't wait. Too bad we aren't there at the same time as I think we have the same schedule mapped out. I don;t know what time you tried the ferry schedule because it was down today for awhile. Try this and then search timetables.

http://www.metrodelmare.com/inglese/home.htm

I will also look into taking the taxi and sharing it with someone is definitely worth it.

Thanks for the info. Will write more tomorrow morning. When do you leave for your trip. Are you just doing the Amalfi Coast?

GoJ-

I just read some reviews for il nido on Trip Advisor and it seems that there is shuttle service as early as 7 am. I’ll try to e-mail Gianni, hopefully then I can make the early ferry connection to Amalfi.

GoJumbos Jun 20th, 2007 05:31 AM

Hi P6-
Thanks for the schedule! I was actually able to get on to the metrodelmar site this morning. That would be great if the shuttle ran early enough to make the earlier ferry. Funny--I too was reading some of the recent reviews of the Il Nido on TripAdvisor last night--the recent reviews over the last month have been fantastic--I can't wait to stay there! As for our trip, we're spending 3 night in Venice, 3 nights in Cinque Terre, 5 nights in Tuscany, 3 in Sorrento and 3 in Rome...we fly there on the 6/30--can't wait!

As for the earlier shuttle, let me know what you hear from Gianni; also, did you see LaWoman's idea about splitting a cab from Amalfi to Ravello w/ another couple? That sounds like a good idea! Hope all is well!

P67742 Jun 20th, 2007 06:48 AM

I just e-mailed Gianni so hopefully I'll hear back soon. Yes, the suggestions for splitting the cab are excellent.

P67742 Jun 20th, 2007 11:55 AM

Our minibus start at 8.00

Earlier only depart day for that guests than need to catch the Roma bus from Sorrento that leave at 06.00am

About the public bus the first one is at 06.00, too early. The second one at 07,00 but once in Sorrento you need take a taxi for be at the port in time.

At least you can call a taxi directly from IL NIDO to the Port, it cost 25,00 euro but you miss the breakfast!

P67742,
We just came back from our trip to Italy last month and stayed at Il Nido. We loved it, but be aware that their shuttle does not go to the marina. You'll need to hop on the orange bus (just 1 euro) that runs between Piazza Tasso and the marina or take a taxi. You could walk, too, but it's a very long steep stairway leading to a very narrow road going to the marina.

P67742 Jun 20th, 2007 12:21 PM

Thanks for the info

joodeep Jul 20th, 2007 05:46 PM

Hi, I'm going to be staying in Positano Aug 2 for about 5 days and would like to take one day to go along the coast to Amalfi and Ravello also, anyone know of a good driver? Are there bus tours to Pompeii?

Steve_James Jul 21st, 2007 12:47 AM

Hi Joodeep - Roads can be at a standstill on the Amalfi Coast in August.

Really the best way to travel between Positano and Amalfi in high season is by ferry (- 25 mins/ €6 ) or hydrofoil (- 15 mins/ €7 ).

The bus up to Ravello from Amalfi costs about € 1.
Alternatively there are taxis (- € 25-30).

If you prefer to go to the expense of a driver from Positano, expect to pay about € 150 for a half-day (- € 300+ for a full day).

There are bus tours from Amalfi to Pompeii, so they may pick up in Positano.

Alternatively you can get there easily by public transport from Positano:
bus to Meta (- 25 mins) then Circumvesuviana train (- 30 mins) to Pompeii Scavi.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

THanks, Steve, that was most helpful.

Hi P,

I assume you are back from your trip to Italy. I hope you had a great time!! I'm leaving in a week and still have not decided on how I will tour the Amalfi coast. What did you end up doing? Please give details such as company used, price paid and stops made.

Thanks in advance.
