Amalfi Coast base?
Well, we've tentatively settled on an itinerary for the Italy portion of our trip in late August. Now comes the decision of which town to use as a base for the AC. Do you recommend Sorrento, Positano (for some reason I'm leaning toward this, though I have no real reason for doing so), or Praiano, where I've heard good things about Le Sirene? We'll be there from Friday through Tuesday, four nights, and would like to have one home base, with a day trip to Capri definitely on the schedule in there somewhere. We'd like to keep our lodging costs under 90 Euro per night if possible. Location and specific hotel recommendations would be wonderful.

Amalfi Coast is well served by Sorrento. Info and a video on our site on the following link

Hi C,
>We'd like to keep our lodging costs under 90 Euro per night if possible. More likely in Praiano than in Positano. You can also take the Orange bus to the Positano docks. You can take ferries to Capri from Sorrento and Positano. The SITA buses and ferries run the Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi-Salerno route. Neither Sorrento nor Positano will be more convenient. Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |
Would you consider an agriturismo? It is the only thing I can think of on the Amalfi Coast for around 90 per night. There is one I love called Serafina (www.agriturismoserafina.it) run by a lovely family in Furore (right next to Positano). They charge 50 per person per day and that includes breakfast and dinner. Their food is amazing and all grown/raised by them. I wouldn't recommend the place if you don't have a car though. It's a bit of a walk to the bus, and the bus service is unreliable.

We stayed in Praiano this past March, and it was just what we were hoping for - quiet little town smack between Amalfi and Positano. We stayed at the hotel Tramonto d'Oro, & the views were just gorgeous. There's a fun little bar/cafe across the street, we sat outside every afternoon drinking campari and watching the tour buses try to negotiate the tiny street. Perfetto!

Sorrento. It's very convenient to both buses, trains & ferries. And there's more night life...if you're looking for night life.
There's just far more strolling area in Sorrento compared to the other towns you mention. |
