Amalfi Coast-Any Places Open in March?
Well, it does seem that DH will be joining me for my last week in Rome (around March 8--15th). I just returned from two weeks on the sailboat with him in the BVI, so fair is fair.
My question--I would like to plan a surprise for him for two nights on the Amalfi Coast (since we have already visited most of the key attractions in Rome on our last visit). He is a sailor and loves anyplace with a water view. My problem is this: I have already contacted several of the favorite places mentioned on this site for the coast, but they are not open until April 1st for the season. Is this idea still possible? Is there anyplace I can consider with a lovely view of the sea that will be open in mid March? Any advice appreciated. I am already in your debt for all of the advice I have received about my month-long stay in Rome. Now I find myself asking for more. Thanks for your time and generousity in sharing from your wealth of experience. I promise a detailed trip report when I return. Also, I can always be asked for information about sailing and living on a sailboat in the BVI. Thanks in advance. jg

Hi JG - It's definitely possible! I suggest you contact the Positano Tourist Information Office and ask them for a list of hotels open in March.

Harsha, thanks so much. I will be looking into these and others mentioned. So grateful for the suggestions, as I was beginning to think that this was not a workable surprise for DH. Will post if and when I discover a place for us for a romantic getaway from the hustle and bustle of Rome. And you are so right! The places that I have checked out so far do have some very affordable rates for mid-March. Thanks again. More suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated. jg

Hello:
Our 25th anniversary trip will be a 12 day tour of Italy. This is remarkable because it will not be water-based.
I would like to ask a fellow BVI sailor if it looked possible to Charter a boat for 2 nights off of the Amalfi coast. As boaters, I am sure that you checked out the possibilities.
Please advise, and thanks,
Anna

Anna - I believe there are several options for charter in the Amalfi Coast/ Bay of Naples area.
Try:

Thanks, I will check out these sites. If we were in the Caribean, we would consider staying on a boat instead of in a hotel for 1 or 2 nights.
Conversely, a day charter with a captain would do very nicely.
In your opinion, are either of these ideas a practical option?

Anna, although DH and I own a catamaran in the BVI and do much sailing there, we really never considered doing any boating along the Amalfi Coast--just 2 days and 2 nights, not enough time. (And this vacation was mostly for me to get AWAY from the boat!) Plus, in early March it was still pretty cool, even on the coast. Also, because it was off-season, I don't believe that there many, if any boats, available for day sails for tourists.
We did, however, stay in a very lovely B&B in Positano called Residenza Alcione, operated by a lovely young woman (Angela) who runs a boutique on the ground floor. I wrote a lot about this place in another thread; perhaps you can locate it. I got the name of the hotel by contacting the Tourist Board in Positano. If you contact them, they may also be able to give you some info about the boating available for that time of year. There is also a web site for the hotel and the Tourist Board (ask for or write to the attention of AnnaBella).
I believe that we were the only people in the place, and Angela let us have the gorgeous 3rd-floor apartment for 90 euros per night. This was a very large and beautiful space, hand-painted tiles, a breathtaking view and TWO terraces! Lovely breakfast was delivered to the room each morning. BTW this charming gem is just a few steps away from the famous, ultra expensive La Sireneuse--about 400-500 euros a night! I just can't recommend it highly enough.
If you do decide to stay there, please contact me again so I can give you some more tips about the easiest way to get there and great places to eat in Positano. Enjoy!
This may or may not work: www.residencealcione.com Let me know. Good luck!

Hello and thanks for the reply.
We are still in our early planning stages and trying to explore all of our options.
We hope to fly to Venice, then head to Rome via Florence. From Rome we are entertaining the idea of renting a car to drive to Pompeii and to visit Capri. (11 days)
As boaters, did you love the Blue Grotto or should we go for an independent boat trip to Capri?
I have already been told that this is too ambitious a plan, but we will only have this one visit and are not Renaissance Art or Church enthusiasts (Blasphemy!)so we will be happy to cruise through some major sites.
(BTW: Is your BVI boat in Charter?)

Anna, as I said earlier, we did not take any boat trips, even to the Blue Grotto, especially after we learned that in early March there weren't many boat services like this for tourists. What we most enjoyed during our too-brief two days was our walk down to the beach (nearly deserted) and our lunch there, shopping for all sorts of lemon-themed products (especially ceramics and limoncello) in the few places that were open, eating great dinners at the other few places that were open, and sitting on our terrace looking at the view (with a great bottle of wine.) It was a total thrill for us that it was the "off-season" and that we got such a great rate on the B&B and did not have to deal with the summer tourist crowds.
Forget the boat, just go and you will love whatever you do and whatever you see.
About the BVI--yes, our boat Sanctuary is still in the charter fleet with Conch Charters (Tortola)--but will not be after this spring, as they now think it is too old (6 years, would you believe?) We still think it is a great boat (from South Africa) and DH has updated it with many features (fans in the kitchen and salon, solar and windmill energy for the batteries.) It has been a very popular boat for charter, but is now obviously "too old" for them to want to carry with their fleet. So DH is now trying to solicit time-shares for people who may want to use it, and of course we still go down quite frequently ourselves. In a way, the BVI has become our vacation home and we have made several friends with the locals and Ex-pats on Tortola, Cane Garden Bay especially.
Please write again if you have any more questions or desire more info. First mate (though still learning), jg

You are right of course, I am now forgeting the boat and going back to planning a land trip.
Thanks for the reality check.
Your time in Positano sounds serene and romantic...
Happy sailing and travels,
Anna

Anna - I'm not sure you really need a car after Rome.
Tourists aren't allowed to take a car to Capri anyway - so you'd need to leave it parked on the mainland. And you can visit Pompeii easily enough without one.
An unnecessary expense, perhaps ...
When are you going? There are lots of other smaller boat companies for day-hire, e.g.
www.gennaroesalvatore.it
www.lucibello.it
I'll post a complete list if you're interested ...

Looks like the Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi is open in March - www.hotelsantacaterina.it. It's beautiful.
I would not have thought the weather would be warm enough for sailing round there in March.

Hi Steve:
Thanks for the information.
These small boats have serious appeal. Our trip is planned for April 9th.
We have 12 days. We will fly into Venice (2nights) and then head to Florence (2 nights) and Rome (3 nights and last night). We added Capri and therefore Pompeii because we wanted to get to the Blue Grotto.
The car is being proposed because I would love to see the back roads and experience the country and the people. We can take that drive out of Venice to Florence and Rome or drive from Rome south. We intend to fly out of Rome.
We are hoping that this time frame is doable.
