Amalfi Coast and what else?
 

We know we want to spend some time in Positano, Sorrento, Capri and Pompeii. We will have two weeks. Is a day or two in Rome enough? Is Florence and/or Venice doable as well...don't want to rush, but I know we can't see it all. First trip recommendations? We will have a car.

With 2 weeks I would do this, and end in Rome:
Amalfi coast--4
Tuscany/Florence---5
Rome--4

Ooops..sorry, just realised that link completely doesn't work. Its the post titled" last minute advice-Florence next week!"

In working on your itinerary, keep in mind that two weeks goes by quickly and if you plan on "doing" most of Italy (Amalfi to Tuscany), you'll be on the go constantly. If you think that you might prefer spending more time soaking up the Italian culture, food, history, and general ambiance rather than participating in a "whiplash tour" of Italy, I would suggest that you drop either Tuscany or Amalfi. Fly into Rome and spend four days there then drive to either Tuscany or Amalfi and spend the remainder of your time. Be aware that if you're a "white knuckle driver," driving down the Amalfi Coast will not be your cup of tea - it's a test of one's driving skills, at best, and a rollercoaster ride, at worst. If this is your first trip to Italy, slow down, relax and enjoy. You can always go back!

One more thing, if you travel south to the Amalfi Coast, do stop at the fabulous ruins in Paestum - when I was last there, there were few people and the size of the site is very manageable in walking.

Now another question....4 adults, one car, probably too much luggage! Anyone had this problem...guess we really need to pack light!

The Amalfi Coast is VERY difficult to drive as is Rome. I would reconsider and take trains. The coast is easy to get around by buses or cabs and in Rome you walk every where. Look at some of the old posts on driving in the AC and Rome. However, Tuscany is a great area to drive. If you must drive you can see if they have a station wagon, but it will still be tight for 4 people and luggage.
