Amalfi Coast again
 

Hello, can anyone explain how I would get from Naples to Amalfi? By ferry? Also, is it easy to get around in Amalfi or would I need a car? I'd like to sightsee, but also hang out at a beach.

Final question, is anyone familiar with Amalfi Hotel...looks fairly reasonable. Thanks

One way is to take a train from Naples to Sorrento, and then take a bus to Amalfi; I think the bus is called SITA. Another is to hire a taxi from Naples. We were glad we had taken the taxi.

They were excellent and really reasonable prices. It was way easier than trying to schlep luggage on a bus...

You can also take the train from Naples to Salerno, and from there take a bus or ferry to Amalfi.

Regarding a car, it is very difficult and expensive to find parking in the Amalfi towns most of the year if it is not provided by your hotel. Also, there is basically only one winding, twisting road that goes along the cliffs by the sea, and some people prefer not to drive it, some people find it a thrill. It high season, in is often quite jammed with bus and auto traffic.

Buses and ferries run between the towns, but they are often crowded, too. Depending on the time of year you are going, it can be a difficult terrain for moving around a lot.

I would take the train to Salerno and the ferry to Amalfi.

The ferry docks are only about 3 blocks from the train station.

You can also take the SITA bus. Buy tickets before you board.

It is very easy to get around the AC on public transportation.

As noted, it is hard to find parking on the Amalfi Coast, especially in July and Aug.

I don't think that Amalfi has a beach.

The only sandy beach I know is in Positano. All of the other towns have tiny, rocky beaches.

Amalfi has a fairly large beach with sand. You can rent chairs, or just bring a towel. There is also a good-sized beach at nearby Atrani, about a 15 minute walk from Amalfi.

You don't need a car, as there is good public bus service for getting to nearby towns. The town of Maiori has one of the largest beaches on the coast..about a half-hour ride east from Amalfi.

Hi herny1; We took a taxi from Ravello to Naples last year. Left at 4am, so the cost was a bit more at 120euros for four people plus tip. He was right on time. Great driver/person. He rewarded us with a little bottle of 'limoncello'. We then remembered that the limoncello could not be taken thru security. There we were drinking limoncello, in the morning, at Naples airport. If your budget is tight, here an option in Atrani, which is a wonderful village and where we saw very few tourists in May; as I noted above, Atrani is a short walk from Amalfi and also has bus connections to other parts of the coast. The price is 50 Euro for a single with private bath.
