Amalfi Coast advice needed
My wife and I are headed back to Naples and Capri for a long weekend in May. We wan't to take a ferry over to the Amalfi coast but not sure how to travel once we're there. Do busses run the coast to the small towns? Can you rent Vestas? Can this be done in a day and get back to the ferry in time for the last run to Capri?

Buses run between all of the towns, including Amalfi, Ravello, and Positano. They run at least every hour so that you can hop from town to town. The best town in the Amalfi for a day vist is Positano. From Positano, you can take a really pleasant ferry ride to Capri or to Sorrento (probably a little over an hour). I would NOT rent a Vespa or a car because driving on the Amalfi coast is crazy and many of the roads are the size of one-way streets and hang over very sharp cliffs.

Great advice, thanks

As stated above there are buses running all day up and down the coast. Start very early in the day if you're coming from Naples. I would suggest a night in Sorrento, and then start from there.

We rented a car and had no trouble driving, although parking is a hassle. The bus is probably simpler.

Visit my website for some photos of the Amalfi Coast and the rest of Italy:
www.jimtardio.com/italy.html

Hi, Jim. Great website; wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing.

Jim, I'm having a DIFFICULT time pulling up your website! Could you possibly "highlight" the web page (you know what I mean!) in this section so I can just click on it and be taken there? Thanks!

Hello Jim:
Just spent half an hour enjoying your lovely photos, - and that was just the ones of Italy! They brought back many memories... A big THANK YOU!!

Steve

Brian,
We just returned from a fabulous stay on the Amalfi coast. We stayed in a villa above Sorrento and had a car. The coast highway is very narrow, steep and curves like a snake. Renting a Vespa would be putting you lives at risk! No Joke! For a day trip I would suggest taking the ferry to Amalfi, see the town and then take the bus up to Ravello. You could do both towns in one day. Ravello is high above Amalfi and the veiws are spectacular. A must is Villa Chimbone. Have a wonderful trip!
Thanks everyone for the great tips. Looks like we'll do the ferry to Positano and maybe take a few bus trips from there.
Anyone have tips on hotels in Capri? We are planning on staying at Hotel Mamela. We saw on on day trip, but has anyone stayed there?

Brian,

Make sure you are not traveling on a holiday weekend. We stayed in Positano over Easter weekend one year and found that the bus to Almalfi ran only twice each day on Friday, Sunday and Monday. We we very happy to have had a car available, as we had missed one that day and the next was 4 hours later. Otherwise, the bus is a great was to see the coast and relax while doing so. Enjoy!
