I am plannng a 12 day trip to the A /C in mid JUNE 2013.
3 days in Rome
3 days in Postiano, Cinque Terre hike,Revello
3 days in Capri, Hike and the Blue cave.
2 days in Florence
back to Rome and home.
I plan to fly in & out of ROME
and train down & back via Florence to fly to Rome & home.
Please give me your opinion or tips.

Hi,

You can certainly hike around Positano and Ravello, but the hikes there have nothing to do with le Cinque Terre, which is in a different part of Italy. But the hikes in the Amalfi are every bit as beautiful.

It would be much easier and cheaper if you added a night to Rome and used it to take a day trip to Florence while you are staying in Rome. If you go to Florence from Capri, it is going to use up an entire day to get there -- which means that even if you have "2 days", you really only have one day to see things. So just get up early one day in Rome, take the 90 minute train to Florence, and stay until 7pm or 8pm, and then go back to Rome.

I don't know how long your plane flight is to Rome, or how energetic you are, but some people would prefer to arrive in Italy at the Rome airport and keep going until they get to Positano. That way, all your days in Rome are grouped together.

But if you think you will be too tired, then stay in Rome when you arrive in Rome.

Other people will have different ideas....

I would put all days in Rome at the end of the trip.

CT is pretty far from the AC. You certainly can't stay on the AC and hike in CT. Check it out on your map.

Do you want to see Pompeii (or any museums in Naples) while you are down there? Several ways to do it, but Positano and Capri are not the best bases for it. You could do it on the day you leave the AC: stash your things in storage at Pompeii, tour, then go on to Rome (or Naples for the night). You could also stay only two nights on Capri, head to Sorrento (or Naples) and visit Pompeii from there.

Normally, I won't take day trips that are longer than an hour each way, but considering the easy train service, the time involved in changing hotels and the fact that you are arriving and departing from Rome, Goldenautumn's suggestion of Florence as a day trip from Rome is very good.

Just FYI, the hikes on the Sorrentine Peninsula have gorgeous views but are very strenuous in many parts. You should carry lots of water, particularly if the weather is warm.

You should also inquire about trail conditions at one of the Tourist Information Offices.

Agree you need to do some checking on the map - CT and AC are nowhere near each other.

Also - IMHO visiting the AC without seeing Pompeii is a huge mistake. To visit it is absolutely shattering.

I agree - train immediately to the AC (via Salerno or Naples) upon arriving in Rome, then put all of your Rome days at the end of your trip. Dealing with the chaos and history of Rome while getting over jetlag can be difficult.

I also like the idea of doing Florence as a daytrip from Rome. The train is fast and painless and it saves you a day of travel and another hotel change. I would then add your extra day to either Rome or Positano.

Obviously, skip CT this trip.

I have been to Venice & Florence before & have already seen David & Uffizi. I will be traveling with some new friends who are first timers and I of course want to shop in Florenze.
I will review the map & rethink my trip.
