amalfi coast

I will be in Rome on business in mid May and plan to have my husband meet me and travel to the Amalfi Coast for a vacation.
I plan to take the train to Naples or Amalfi from Rome. I want to spend 2 or 3 days(which?) on Capri. Would it be best to take a ferry from Naples to Capri and then to Amalfi.
Any suggestions for hotels or B & B, etc. I am thinking of using the hotel in Amalfi as a base for day trips. We will spend a total of 8 or 9 days on this trip.

Hi P,

It is shorter to go Rome/Naples/Capri/Amalfi than Rome/Salerno/Amalfi/Capri/Amalfi.

I was there at the same time in 2008. I highly recommend Hotel Floridiana in Amalfi. Although I do not usually post reviews on TripAdvisor, I lent my voice to the chorus of enthusiastic comments from guests that has led to the hotel's current #1 ranking on the site:

I've stayed at a lot of hotels in a lot of beautiful places, and while the Floridiana is a rather modest place (therefore no seaview), my stay there ranks with the most memorable I've had on any trip.

We spent 5 days there and it was only with great reluctance that I tore myself away.

Cost for superior double was about 130 Euro per night with breakfast. (That price was higher than usual due to the holiday week)

I loved Amalfi and was so glad I had chosen it as my base.

To give you further recommendations, I/we would have to learn a bit more about your tastes..

I take it that your husband is meeting you in Rome? If so, consider hiring a car and driving down to the Amalfi coast. It's about a 3/4 hour easy drive.

Base yourself at Sorrento, which although is just a seaside resort, it's pleasant enough. It also has a direct ferry or seacat to Capri. I personally think that a day on Capri is enough--it's madly expensive, very pushy and there's not enough to keep you busy for 2/3 days, unless you just want to chill.
People have a romantic notion about it, but not for me.

From Sorrento, you can go to Pompeii, Herculaneum (same day), Vesuvius: then Positano, Ravello, Amalfi and the rest of the Amalfi coast.

Enjoy!

You can't take a train to Amalfi - it goes only as far as Sorrento.

And you should be aware that travel to/fro Capri is limited after early evening - so it's a nice place to stay - but you can;t have dinner on the mainland and then tke a boat back - unless you hite a private one.

Staying in Amalfi means you will have to get everyplace by bus or ferry - unless you rent a car (not advisable unless your hotel has parking).

What are your key sights? Assuke Pompeii and Museum in Naples re among them.

Finally, we found the pools to be fine in May, but some people may find the sea too cool for swimming.

With 8-9 days you could have a fantastic time, split between Capri and Amalfi!
