Amalfi Coast

Hi, We will be in Sorrento in mid April and want to do a tour of the Amalfi Coast. We had, more or less, decided on doing our own thing by bus(The ferries are not running in April) but our Hotel has put together an 8 hr tour including lunch at a very reasonable price. The only problem is that they stop to view Positano but do not visit there. We do stop at Amalfi and Ravello. Should we still go by bus and stop at Positano or do the tour? In other words does Positano offer anything the other places dont?. Cheers Pawsha

Hi P,

What's the very reasonable price?

Where will you have lunch?

Will there be a tour guide?

Although I often recommend taking tours, in my opinion a tour to these places would not only be unnecessary but disruptive to one's enjoyment of the towns. These are towns in which to linger, to shop, take in a view, sit for awhile at a cafe, enjoy the gardens at your leisure, not to go from one sight to another. And, yes, Positano is quite different from Amalfi and Ravello. All three can be done easily in one day from Sorrento via bus. And there are lots of great restaurant choices in Positano and Ravello.

Metro del Mare has their ferry schedules for 2007 listed on their website for April. Click on low season which is March-May. There won't be as many departures as in summer, but you should be able to find a time that works. Maybe ferry one direction and take the bus back.

Dont know about tour guide, light lunch supplied at a cost of 46.5 euros. For 8 hours I thought this is reasonable but if there is no guide,we may just as well go by bus or ferry. Thanks for ferry timetable kybourbon. When I last enquired ferries were expected to be "in dock". Cheers Pawsha

Hi Pawsha - I agree entirely with Gabriele.

To be restricted to a tour would spoil my day - these are definitely places to visit at leisure, at your own pace.

The ferries will be running in April - weather permitting - though not on full schedule. You could ferry between Positano and Amalfi ... or vice versa, depending on timing.

For SITA bus timetables (Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi-Ravello) see:

Hope this helps ...

Hi P,

SITA bus will be about 20E pp RT Sorrento/Ravello.

It will take about 2:30-3:00 hr RT.

Lunch will be about 15E pp.

So, doing it yourself will leave you about 5 hr for sightseeing and cost about 35E pp.

Your tour looks quite reasonable.

Do you have time to take a ferry ride to Positano on another day?

Hi Ira - A day-pass (- biglietto giornaliero) for the Sita buses Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi-Ravello costs about € 7 - not € 20.
